So you can probably guess what I'm going to ask. What good are grot riggers on a vehicle walker squad when it becomes immobilized it's considered destroyed. Grot riggers repaired immobilized vehicles on the next vehicles shooting phase. So if your opponent immobilizes one of your vehicles do you roll for grot riggers then and if it fails you remove it or do you wait tell your shooting phase to see if they fail. Or is this just a funny upgrade that really doesn't do anything?

It's for when you run kanz in the singular in small games like 500pts or so

Grot Riggers can't repair immobilized Kans in a squadron. Immobilized = destroyed immediately. If you want, you can give them one, and he may get to work on one if you have one Kan that outlasts the others - if there is only one left it can be repaired by the grot. Might as well spend the points elsewhere. Make sure you put one on your Dread!

They work fine on individual Kans - but everyone seems to take them in herds!

They were useful last edition (when the codex was written) when you had the option of leaving the vehicle and counting it as destroyed or hanging the rest of the squadron back with it...

This edition, though? As has been pointed out, they're only any use on single walkers.

And also, the armour plates are also useless, since squadrons take all stunned as shaken anyways.

Which is why you take them only on 1 kan, so when the other 2 are killed and it reverts back to a non squadron, they become useful

The ork codex is full of silly things like that. For Example, Ghazgul has Stikkbombz >.<

Well if only it was that easy. I constantly see people play Squadrons wrong where they assume the last model standing instantly becomes immune to immobilized destruction. Determining 'squadron status' happens at the beginning of the shooting phase, not the damage result phase. If it was in a squad when the unit was targeted, then if all 3 models get immobilized, all 3 models are destroyed. Not 2 destroyed, one survives.

Also, since you have to allocate glance/pens, you can't guarantee the rigger can will not take a hit and become destroyed somehow. You can try to avoid it and allocate softballs hots at him, but with STR 5 shots being able to harm them, it is not uncommon to take lots of damage results in a single turn and being forced to allocate multiple results to every kan in the unit. If the rigger kan fails his cover and results, he is pfft and the riggers don't magically leap to the survivor.

I often see people roll the results as a group and then assign the results to targets so they can guarantee to keep the bad result off the prize model in the squad... but technically, if that was legal because that is how regular units work, then you need to follow WAC group rules and the second a Kan gets a rigger he becomes an isolated WAC group and his results need to be isolated anyways.

The only way to reliably and accurately have the last Kan standing be a rigger kan is to give everyone the upgrade and waste 10 extra points. Or give 1 kan the upgrade, follow the rules accurately and have a very good chance your rigger kan will die first due to bad luck and the upgrade will be wasted.

Beware of floating upgrades for last model standing and how somehow the last one alive is always the over-equipped one. It can happen, but may not be common and requires surveillance.
