Hey guys I just finished painting my Monolith and it looks great. (would post pics but my parents have my camera) I use a blue & gold color scheme . I'm looking at the Monolith Transfer Sheet, and they are all gold symbols... Which would look great on my Monolith.

I just had to ask what do you guys think of using Transfers or Decals.

Also wondering if anyone had any tips on both applying them, and using/keeping them in perfect condition.

Moving flat out..

I haven't applied too many transfers..

This is for Tau, but it just basically shows you how to go about placing them on your models.

If you're going to be placing them on anything which isn't very flat you might want to look into getting Micro Sol and Micro Set, which are solutions specifically designed to help you get them to lie as flat as possible over uneven surfaces.

From some of the stuff I've read or seen a good idea seems to be to apply a coat of gloss varnish over the surface prior to applying the decal as this allows it to adhere much better than it does to paint.

Can I suggest skipping forward 10 years to the age where you don't really care about what people say on the internet. Studies show that it decreases your anger about life in general by 37%. - Flashman

Natorum is spot on. Microsol and Microset are awesome!

I usually put down a layer of gloss varnish where the decal is going- this keeps the decal from fogging. Once it's dry I put another layer of gloss varnish over the top of it to seal it - this also helps it look more painted on.

To get rid of the shine from the gloss hit the model with a coat of Testors Dull Cote - knocks ALL the shine off of it.

I use GW's decals on my Dark Angels without any basing or other chemicals. I just wet it in lukewarm water and then slide it into place with a hobby knife or paint brush- depending on size and placement. Then I carefully paint around the border with the color the decal is sitting on in order to conceal the shiny bit. When I apply my overcoat of varnish- matt, semigloss or gloss- depending on the desired look the decal appears to be a part of the paint scheme. At least, I am happy with the look and it is quick and easy to apply. Hope this helps.

For best results, apply them over a gloss coat (ONLY the area to have the decal), apply and then cover with a matt varnish.

Micro-Sol and Micro-Set are handy for compound curved surfaces (like shoulder pauldrons) but not required - it doesn make the job a lot easier though.
