I'm painting a variation of the Hawk Lords Chapter and as I was looking through the codex I noticed that Ultramarines are really the only chapter that has different helmet colors to denote rank, troop type, etc. I'm wanting to do that on my Hawk Lords too, as well as the laurels. Here are some pics of some of my marines, can I get some input on what color to paint the Terminators, Veterans, and Assault Marines helmets? I want all three of them to be different, and I'm a little hesitant about doing the red helmet color, I don't think it'll go well with my scheme. Let's see what Dakka thinks.

Guys are way too shiny. Ultramarines are not the only chapter with the whole helmet rank thing going on. The majority of sm chapters follow the codex astartes. The actual codex:sm says that marine's helmets also frequently displays honours or rank, either through colour or insignia. So most chapters will have the white helmet for vets, red for the squad's sarge etc. If you don't want to paint the whole helmet red, well just paint the sarge's head white with a red stripe and say a veteran is leading the squad. Or just use a screming baldy head.

White, black, and gold (the same gold you're already using) would all look good and fit your existing colour scheme. I agree red probably wouldn't be so good - although maybe ok for individual characters.

I agree that the Codex helmet markings wouldn't look quite right.

I think instead, you should use a blue-green, or jade color, as this contrasts nicely with purple, as blue and red. Also, a deep blue, like Mordian Blue should accentuate nicely, and finally gold, for the highgest ranks.

Specifically, I'd go with:

Sgts: Mordian Blue helm, no laurel or purple helm, jade laurel
Vets: Jade helm, purple laurel
HQ/Vet Sgt: Gold Helm, Purple Laurel

what if I gave my Sgts Purple helms with White Laurels, gave my vets White Helms with Hawk Turquoise Laurels, My Assault marines Hawk Turqoise helms with white Laurels, and Hq like you said, gold with purple laurels? i don't wanna do the Mordian blue, I think it'll be too dark, and I want the off colored helms to stand out alot. Does that sound like a winner? And p.s. i hate the bald screaming space marine heads! I will never use them if i dont have too. I like my models to have hair. lol. no offense to any bald people, my dad's bald and I'm well on my way...

Yeah, I know what you mean. Screaming baldies are just ugly. Anyways, as long as your opponent knows what coloured head means what, you'll be fine.

I think white would be a great colour for a purple scheme like that. Black might be too dark? Also, I think because the armor is purple you could get away with a red or blue.

Seconded... but that's just my personal preference.

Also, with that colour scheme, I liked the suggesstion of gold helmets. Even Silver would look sharp with the gloss paint job you've got going. Yellow and white are two other options that might work well to give your marines some individual flair. I agree with the above post that says black would be a bit too dark. Try a few and lets see how they turn out!

I use a personal colour scheme for higher ranks. Just do what you wish.

No, actually yelow and purple look great together. A colour on the oppisite end to another colour on the wheel is called a complentary. That's why red and green look so good together. They are complementaries of each other whiich brightens up or emphasizes the colours. But, this is just me being technical. i wanna see more hawk lords!

I'm working on finishing up my hawk lords grey knight terminator, then on to a regular terminator! will post pics when they're done. I'm gonna try the yellow, but i've never painted with yellow before, any tips on doing it? maybe a link to a thread that'll help?

On white, you can just paint on yellow straight away, I think. On a black undercoat, you should put a layer of iyanden darksun, before putting on your yellow. btw, golden yellow is a bit easier to put then sunburst yellow.

Maybe try yellow eyes ? That might be a bit to brightly colourful to have purple , turquise and yellow all around the head area . But its probably worth a shot
