I got a model to paint up from the LGS's Black box.

I like the jump back but not the wings so they were left off.

After being bombarded with all the recent images of the Sanguinary Guard, my first impression was that it didn't look "right" without the wings.

But, at second (and third and more) glance I find I really like the look of that single jet jump pack without the wings !!

I might still keep the wings on my Sang. Guard but I'll definitely be getting more packs for my regular Assault Troops.

I have to say, I prefer the SG with the wings. However, I LOVE your muted gold scheme! It looks much, much better than the garishly bright GW one.

No wings makes him look much meaner, instead of much holier than thou. Nice.

I actually prefer the wings, kinda makes me sad they are not on.

Golds
Base coat w/ a black spray
Base coat with Silver spray
Base coat Vallejo Model Color brass

Wash model in Badab Black
recapture base with thinned VMC Brass and on highlights
Highlight 2 with VMC old Gold
Highlight 3 w/ VMC old gold 50:50 with mithril

Shade w/ Red wash (forgot the name) in creases carrying a bit onto the gold
Shade w/ thinned chestnut ink

Final highlight w/ mithril 70:30 w/ old gold

Eyes are Dark angels w/ a dot of VMC ice yellow.

Base coat reds w/ Mechrite
Reds are re based w/ thinned Red Gore. This is concentrated on the high areas of sword and shoulder
H1 Red GOre: Blood Red 50:50
H2 Blood Red
H3 Blood Red:Fiery Orange
H4 Fiery Orange
H5 touch of Ice yellow and fiery orange

The highlights are pretty thin on the reds with multiple coats at each step.

Wings
Base in VMC Green Grey
Wash Badab Black
H1 Astronomicon Grey
H2 White
Shade w/ Privateer Press thinned turquoise ink in receases

Metal is boltgun, H1 w/ Mithril wash w/ Badab and Devlan Mud.

Hmm, now I'm interested in getting those models just for the non-standard jumppacks - it's a nice alternative look, with or without wings.

All the wing icons also makes me wonder whether these models might convert nicely for a Dark Angels army
