I concur the Martian Fighting Machine was a work of visionary genius, H.G. Wells was far ahead of his time.

However its a weapons platform not a weapon IMHO. I could therefore vote for the Heat Ray or Black smoke but I think a light sabre has them beat.

Oh I didn't ignore the obvious 70's boob shots in the movie. Very nice since they were real except at times it looked like a small woodland creature with g-string.

Is this "coolest" or "most powerful"? I don't care about the latter topic. As to the former, I have to go with bolter. I don't care about the (extensive) damage it can do or how it compares against a lightsaber. It's a huge roaring cannon of fully automatic heresy-ending fun. I'm also quite fond of the Eldars' shuriken weapons. Witchblades are also pretty baddass. And then there're inferno pistols, daemon weapons, destructors, etc, etc, etc. In fact, I'd say that the Warhams Forty Million has the coolest armory around.

Don't forget the Shokk Attack Gun.

the best weapon ever is the DEATH STAR! nothing says 'please dont point that at my planet' like it.

The Death Star had stats in the old (D6) role play system. It was pretty bollocks at hitting a man sized target.

PPCs from Battletech are pretty cool weapons. Molecular stilettos and vibroblades (both from Star Wars) are also pretty interesting. Oh, and thermal detonators and concussion rifles!

Do you really need to hit a man-sized target when you can just blow a freakin planet out from under him?

There are many cool SF weapons in books by Philip K Dick, especially in The Zap Gun.

In the Iain M Banks novel 'Against A Dark Background', the weapon called The Lazy Gun is pretty cool.

Yes cool, as is the SDF1 firing the macro cannon-like a gauss cannon biggie sized. Still, a moving weapon platform that can blow up a planet in under a second has a lot going for it. Plus it has this guy:.
