point singularity projector - from andromeda- a weapon which fires BLACK HOLES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wiki entry
A point singularity projector fires mini-black holes at its target, the Magog generally use these weapons on their Swarm ships and the World ship. These weapons inflict heavy damage and can destroy a ship very quickly

Ok this is a very simple sci-fi weapon that you all are overlooking and its most evil of applications.
The Sandman's gun from Logan's Run!
Come on people. How cool would it be to burst through the door of your local mall at 9 AM with all the elderly people speed walking laps around the mall while you were screaming at the top of your lungs, "Its last day runners! Run Runners!"

edit: I forgot the "why"...
The M56 Smart Gun from Aliens... "Used in Aliens by the conspicuously flirtatious duo of PFCs Vasquez and Drake, the M56 Smart Gun served as point weapon for the US Colonial Marine unit investigating LV-426 and looked pretty awesome in the process. A modified German machine gun attached to a steady-cam harness with a motorcycle handle trigger, the gun was the brainchild of writer/director James Cameron and will undoubtedly be the weapon of choice for many following the release of the upcoming Sega title Aliens: Colonial Marines.
Employing advanced caseless ammunition and a firing computer capable of locking onto moving targets, our only question is: why did it take over twenty years for this movie to be made into a first person shooter?"
Ever played any AVP game?...thats why.
The Fookin Prawn Arc Gun from District 9 "DON'T POINT YEOOR FOOKIN TENTACLES AT MEH!"
two words.... VOIMP!...pop! The BFG 9000 from DOOM
why? if for any reason you would like to redecorate a room full of demons and imps and barons of hell....with a red paint job...
Any weapon from the amazing show firefly, particularly Zoe's Sawed off laser Winchester. (which is actually a "leg winchester"...but, whatevs)
why? because I want it, and it's also a great melee weapon...
one of my FAVORITES, Deckard's sidearm from the fantastic movie, Bladerunner....
same as above and it's just waaay cool.
The Cerebreal Bore from Turok 2
seriously?

AT-AT. Not only a fantastic homage to the above but also the coolest toy I never had.
I concur the Martian Fighting Machine was a work of visionary genius, H.G. Wells was far ahead of his time.
However its a weapons platform not a weapon IMHO. I could therefore vote for the Heat Ray or Black smoke but I think a light sabre has them beat.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.
It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

You were watching Logan's Run and you were thinking about guns?
Tsk, kids of today.
BTW: If by "elderly people" you mean the over thirty, I'm screwed.
Oh I didn't ignore the obvious 70's boob shots in the movie. Very nice since they were real except at times it looked like a small woodland creature with g-string.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.
Is this "coolest" or "most powerful"? I don't care about the latter topic. As to the former, I have to go with bolter. I don't care about the (extensive) damage it can do or how it compares against a lightsaber. It's a huge roaring cannon of fully automatic heresy-ending fun. I'm also quite fond of the Eldars' shuriken weapons. Witchblades are also pretty baddass. And then there're inferno pistols, daemon weapons, destructors, etc, etc, etc. In fact, I'd say that the Warhams Forty Million has the coolest armory around.

PPCs from Battletech are pretty cool weapons. Molecular stilettos and vibroblades (both from Star Wars) are also pretty interesting. Oh, and thermal detonators and concussion rifles!

Renewed! Renewed!
Meanwhile, I vote for the proton pack;

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

What, no mention of the Wave Motion Gun from Star Blazers?
...A super-powerful weapon on the Space Battleship Yamato, so powerful that it could destroy the ship! It is SO dangerous that it simply must be fired at the climax of every single episode!
Yes cool, as is the SDF1 firing the macro cannon-like a gauss cannon biggie sized. Still, a moving weapon platform that can blow up a planet in under a second has a lot going for it. Plus it has this guy:.
