I took my yellow and green Wardens of Tomorrow (aka, the John Deer Marines) to the 40k Championship. It's an Ironclad spam list, the twist being that I don't pod them, and that I tart them up more than the usual. Here's the list.

Master of the Forge w/servo harness
2 Servitors
Librarian w/Might of the Ancients + Null Zone
5 Tactical Space Marines w/Razorback w/twin linked lascannon
5 Tactical Space Marines w/Razorback w/twin linked lascannon
5 Tactical Space Marines w/Razorback w/twin linked lascannon
6 Assault Marines w/Fist Champ +Rhino
6 Ironclad Dreadnaughts w/melta + Heavy flamer + 2 HK missiles + Ironclad launchers

This is my current serious tournament list. It fights well at objective and KP vs. a variety of competitive lists. Three main weaknesses are really good gunlines where I have a bad HK round, doom units that don't care how many dreads assault them, and shoot and scoot enemies.

EDIT: Yay, a pic! Thanks Zerodyne!

http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/94631-.html

I was on the yellow side. I didn't see any pictures of my list in any of the galleries, but a couple of folks took some, maybe it's on the net, maybe not.

Mission 1:

Pitched battle
Primary: Annihilation
Secondary: Kill all Troop choices while having one or more troops alive yourself.
Tertiary: Win by 250 or more VP's
Bonus points for killing all FA, HS, Elite

Enemy:

Nids (Yes! Not Guard or Space Wolves...so sick of playing them...)
Tyrant w/twinlinked devourers, Leech Essence, Paroxysm
Hive Guard (2)
Zoeys (2)
Hive Guard (2)
Tervigon w/catalyst, dominion, regen (+fighty upgrades)
Tervigon w/catalyst, dominion, regen (+fighty upgrades)
10 Termagaunts
10 Termagaunts
5 Warriors w/Barbed Strangler
5 Warriors w/Barbed Strangler
2 Carnifexes

Nids go first

Nid 1: Nids advance + shoot, FNP on Fexes
Marine 1: Marines hold steady, HKs and lascannons at Zoey's, kill 1 (wtf?)
Nid 2: Nids advance + shoot, FNP on fexes
Marine 2: lascannons + Null zone executes last zoey. meltaguns deal 3 wounds to fexes
Nid 3: Pair of fexes pounce, Ironclad kills 1 and wounds other before being torn apart
Marine 3: 3 fexes pounce on tyrant, 2 on fex, kill both, consolidate forward
Nid 4: Nids back up, more shooting from tyrant guard
Marine 4: Marines pursue + kill tyrant guard and 1 Tervigon
Nid 5: Full on flight now
Marine 5: Marines get last Tervigon

Game ends on 5. This was a very steady game. The nids seethed across the field like a tide, but like a tide receded in the face of ironclad wall. They only had the fexes and zoey's that could really threaten, and once they were mobbed they just had to run for it.

I was able to get Primary and Tertiary, but couldn't get secondary (draw), I got all bonuses.

Game #2:

Mission #2:

Deployment, 18" dawn of war
Primary: Seize ground, scoring units take terrain pieces
Secondary: Elimination (kill all enemy HQ units while keeping one alive)
Tertiary: Get 500 more VP's than enemy player

bonuses for having a model from a scoring unit within 3" of the center
bonuses for having your most expensive unit alive
bonus points for having all HQ's alive

Enemy:

Space Marines
Pedro Kantor
Cassius
5 TH/SS Terminators w/Land Raider Crusader
10 Sternguard w/1 combi melta + sergeant w/lightning claw
Twin linked autocannon dread
Land Radier (godhammer)
10 man tac squad w/rhino w/plasma cannon/plasma
10 man tac squad on foot w/lascannon/melta

His color scheme is Dark Angels, but he's using the SM codex. It's a well painted list.

Top 1: He moves his LR's onto the board, Cassius is with the Terminators, Pedro is with the Sternguard in the Godhammer
Bottom 1: I march my guys on the board, spreading them out to head for terrain pieces
Top 2: He does some shooting, shakes a razorback I think
Bottom 2: I do some shooting, I think i kill the rhino with his 5 man combat squad, spilling them into the table center.
Top 3: He moves the Crusader up and lets out the Terminators, they charge a dread as he multi-melta immobilizes another. They immobilize the one they are fighting as well.
Bottom 3: Master fixes the immobilized dread, others move on across the board. Fixed dread charges into Terminator combat, null zone turns on. No hits...doh!
Top 4: More moving and shooting on his part, he downs a razorback, I think. He also shakes a bunch of dreads right through their smoke. He destroys the immobilized dread with his terminators, but it's explosion kills 4 Terminators (wtf?)
Bottom 4: Dreads start reaching the units and forcing him out of terrain pieces. Assault squad rescues the dread from the Terminators
Top 5: He gets desperate, LR's in close, sternguard get out, etc. Dice refuse to oblige him, dreads survive the shooting.
Bottom 5: Dreads start locking up his scoring units as mine spread out into the terrain.

Game actually goes through bottom 7, but nothing else really happens.

I get primary, secondary is a draw (Cassius is dead but Pedro's alive, my guys are alive), as is tertiary. I get the bonus for keeping my HQ's alive.

Game #3:

Deployment: Spearhead
Primary: Get alpha (11) and 2 Beta (5 each) objectives.
Secondary: Have a unit in each quarter
Tertiary: Win by 750 Vp's

Enemy:
Space Wolves
Njal
4 Wolf Guard w/combi flamers
5 man Wolf scout pack w/meltagun and melta bombs
5 man wolf scout pack w/meltagun and melta bombs
6 Grey Hunters Razorback w/twin linked heavy bolter
6 Grey Hunters Razorback w/twin linked heavy bolter
6 Grey Hunters Razorback w/twin linked heavy bolter
Land Speeder w/multi melta
Lascannon/HB pred
Lascannon/HB pred
5 Thunderwolf Cav w/Pfist
5 Thunderwolf Cav w/Pfist

We argued a lot this game, so I don't feel like revisiting it (it was markedly unpleasant) beyond the broad strokes. Effectively it was a list mismatch. Most of his anti-tank comes from his thunderwolf cav. Plainly, that wasn't going to work this time.

Our disagreement started with cover saves and continued from there. It's vexing, as I feel like we could have liked each other in a different game. Just somehow not compatible folks, I guess. Ah well, I guess you get one of those in any given batch of 11 games. Anyway, the game.

Basically the wall marched forward, he sent in the wolves and they got killed. His dice weren't very good and he was just shaking the clads a lot. He lured us into splitting up for the objectives and tried to get his scouts to come form the flank, but my scorers mobbed them.

Towards the end his luck turned around and he popped several clads, but it wasn't going to be enough. He was contesting one secondary and I had the main and other secondary, with me in 4 quarters and him not. On the last round, though, Njal got his "d6 s8 hits to everyone nearby" power, and zipped up behind all my clads, popping two and costing me secondary. This was karmic, as Njal got assassinated in the team tourney (much more detailed report on that, later).

So, I got Main and one secondary on primary. We both lost secondary, and neither of us got tertiary.

With three 'wins' I was 21'st, a respectable showing, to my mind. I had a great time, and just seeing the army's at the Adepticon Championship was worth the price of admission. There were at least 10 army's that were absolutely amazing.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

It was nice to finally meet you. You are a lot younger than I thought.

I had 2 bad games in the championship. I am normally laid back and easy going but I argued rules this time around and it make my game #2 and #3 of the championships unpleasant. I was right in both cases, but it hurt my sportsmanship score. I need to go back to my easy going ways.

That looks like roughly the same list I played against Friday night. If it was, I'm sorry you didn't have a good game with him, I've played him a couple of times now and he's a good guy (he posts here sometimes too).

Of course, with the number of space wolves there, it could just be a different player with the same list idea.

@Blackmoor: I actually met a lot of guys from dakka. That was pretty cool! Sorry to hear you didn't have fun in some of the championship games. My usual theory is that I'll play 11 games at Adepticon, I sort of owe the universe two nonfun ones.

@Red: Could well be. I bet if I played that guy again I'd have a good game. We just got on each other's nerves in this game.

EDIT: Also, yay! Was perusing the dakka gallery and I saw a pic of this army! link and thanks added to batrep.

@Red it was me (the normal space wolves player at AWC).

It was my 10th game of the weekend and I've gotten tired of fighting over rules with some people so I was most likely a little short. I did feel it was a good game especially considering 6 Ironclads is basically my nightmare list.

Overall I enjoyed the game and am sorry you thought the rules questions took away from the enjoyment.

Thx for all the ironclad reports! I recently bought 3 AOBR dreads and converted them to ironclads. One question though: Get Ironclads the 3+ cover save from bolster defences? And how do you play your MOTF? Together with his servo buddies on foot behind the dreads? Or does he ride with the assault squad? Or in the last row in a razoback?

A walker must have at least 50 percent of it's armored side being targeted obscured to get the cover save.

I know. But when it IS obscured you normaly get the 4+ save. Does this save becomes a 3+ now? When it does you can use this to your advantage. Start your walkers behind a bolstered ruin, during the alpha strike you stay in cover.

Pretty cool list 40kE. Are you using deer as your chapter insignia? If so then a big 'trucker hat'-s off for coolness!

I am also curious how you are running the MotF. I assume on foot since he has servitors?

BGB pg 62 wrote:If the target is obscured and suffers a glancing or penetrating hit, it may take a cover save against it, exactly like a non-vehicle model would do against a wound (for example, a save of 5+ for a hedge, 4+ for a building, 3+ for a fortification, and so on).

So yes vehicles would benefit from the fortified ruin if their obscurement came from the ruin (granted the rules don't cover how much of the 50% has to come from the ruin and how much can come from elsewhere...)

It depends on the mission, in general. You don't want him to get shot down in a KP mission with his unit, it's 2 KP with 4 wounds between them. In objective missions though he troops along with the unit. In a KP he either rides with the librarian or with one of the razorback squads.

Yep, pretty much depends how well your alpha strike does, to see if my army would do alright. Though the 2 princes should survive a decent bit, Null Zone really hurts. I think this would be one of the few games I ended up deepstriking the princes, to wait out the alpha strike and because there's nothing really to lash anyway until some transports are popped.

But beyond that, none of my regular units can really take down an ironclad. Even my defilers go last and get hit on 3's, so they're out of luck.

Its certainly an interesting list. One question - why no combat squad capable units? It seems to be one of the most competitive tools in the SM list for tournament play.
