Hey friend, welcome to the LOTR hobby!

First off, there are 2 different games. One is LOTR. This one involves just skirmishes. If you bought the Mines of Moria boxed set, you are playing LOTR.

Second there's the army game which is a whole different game called WOTR. (It does use the same models, however).

OK, so yes, there are several armies to choose from. Some are Good, some are Evil. So your first choice, really, is to decide if you want Good or Evil.

Afterwards, choose your army. All the Moria stuff (like goblins, the Balrog, and so on) are part of the Misty Mountains army. This army has other cool stuff like Stone Giants and Cave Trolls.

Other evil armies: Isengard, Mordor, Easterlings, more I think.

Good armies: Elves, Dwarves, Rohan, Gondor, more of course.

Want all the details? Buy the hardcover book called "War of the Ring." It is a blue book with a picture of Gandalf charging a wagonload full of orcs while on Shadowfax.

Oh, and for your last question, if you pick an evil army (say Misty Mountains) then you can choose SOME models from a different Evil army (25%). So yes, you can mix and match a little. Same goes for Good armies. Only exception - if you take a Good army you can't mix evil models into your army and visa versa I think.

You can find out more on the Games Workshop website, of course.

Actually I beleive you choose which army list you want to use, (say moria) and then choose which side your on. So you can conceivably have a Goblin army with high elf archers.

No. You cannot use Good and Evil in the same force. Otherwise you could have the most powerful units from each army in one.
