Hey people,

I've got this idea lately, maybe some people know this already

I thought,if we all spend time on lists, why not battle plans?

For example, you are facing an enemy you know for 2 years, but you just can't beat him(for me the dark Eldar player in my LGS).You could draw out the whole map, state where you are going to place the terrains, what probabilities they will move where, how you are going to move, what you are going to do.
Of course, you don't have to plan out everything, because you can't.There is so many possiblities(and thats why the game is fun) that you will need a whole suitcase of paper work to bring with you to your LGS,like a debate.

I've done mine through 3 hours. Not totally 3,cuz I was studying math and came up with the idea(I was just learning Geometry and starting possibilities, two main elements for 40k)

I've got a basic plan of my objectives each turn, what to prevent, how to prevent, possiblities my reserves will come in,possibilities my shot will hit, what it will take to destroy one raider, formation and etc

You could do your own,and learn some math by the way

Hope I helped

Me being a dark eldar player, my battle plans usually end up as

1. Take out his transports

2. Blow everything that was in said transports to the warp

3. Take slaves.

4. enjoy slaves after battle

I think that it's hard to percieve all possibilies. Yes you can prepare your own battle plan, but it's almost impossible to know what your opponent will do AND have the dice come out at what you expect. Inevitably you will have to alter the original battle plan because "Even the best laid plans do not survive contact with the enemy", or something like that.

Obviously you can get a perfect plan, but a basic plan would be alright

This is the sort of thing you do during a battle. Having a well thought out deployment and movement phase is essential, and is one of the biggest advantages of giving up first turn.

Why is this is the Army List section? You need to take greater care where you start your threads.

You brighten my life like a polystyrene hat, but it melts in the sun like a life without love, and I've waited for you so I'll keep holding on without you.

Don't you do this before every game? This would explain a lot of results we had in the past.

Well..... Tzeentch could figure out the perfect battle plan. Be like Tzeentch; plan every move out to the last dice role: you can do it! Plan, plan, plan, and you will win every time. Bring the suitcase, become a computer, just do it

That kind of thing is hard to figure out beforehand, because the terrain is variable, and if your opponent is good he may deploy or act in an unexpected way. It's better to think about how you will use particular units, or how you will deploy to protect yourself on the first turn. From there, it's just winging it.

Example: You want your demon prince to survive until he gets into assault, so you decide well before the battle to deploy him behind a land raider and some rhinos, so they block LOS to him for the opening turns. This is a good, specific plan for one part of your army. Drawing out a diagram showing every unit you have is just going to dissolve, because the terrain will change - terrain makes infantry hard to maneuver precisely and absolutely screws up vehicles, so you can't plan with any degree of precision unless you fight on a fixed board (and even then, you'd need a plan for each side)

Wellllll, this one time I had gotten it completely set up so that at least one quadrant of the board was completely to my planning, and I would've been able to keep a rather large part of the enemy mob stuck right there at a point between 2 hills if time hadn't run out (grumble grumble)

Planning would be excellent if you already knew what force you would be facing. Remember the quote "no battle plan ever survives first contact with the enemy."

I also subscribe to the "fly by the seat of your pants" adapt and overcome what's happening right now on the battlefield. I will try to mitigate by bringing an all-comers list to deal with various threats, but the rest of the time is spent trying to outmaneuver and outshoot.

As much as I'd like to be a tactical genius, I'm still learning after 20 years of this!

I've found Vassal useful for tactical planning... I muse over skirmishes on the screen and try to work out how to plan accordingly for specific engagements... though I can never truly anticipate my opponent.
