So I'm thinking of getting a FW nid heirophant.

How tall is it? Is it too big to even think of putting it in a model case/bag for transport? How wide of a hunk of wood will I need if I want to give it a base? is a base even a good idea, or should I leave it with the feet talons free on the table? are the feet talons strong enough to support the weight of the model or can they eventually bend or snap?

It's approximately 10.5" tall.

I based mine on a 14" base.
That was the smallest round base that it could fit on. It would be possible to put it on a much smaller rectangular or irregular shaped base.

It is possible to reinforce the legs so that it can stand without a base.
This was my bible when I assembled mine........

I've been thinking about transport and so far bags for carrying individual drums in seem to be winning!

Get the kit! It's fun and extra satisfying to have completed.

EDIT: Also are you going to Alienid it? That would be mental.

The 2 people I know that have them actually have them sitting on a peg that goes up in to the beasts belly that is then mounted on a base.

Its big and they legs are some what fragile for all that weight.

Of course it will be an Alienid I'm just gonna do the forehead area and kinda make it like the "eye" area is peeing out under the shell on the head kinda like the queen, since the body is so snake like and it doesn't have a separate head to make the whole thing round and smooth.

Thats a good article but all that pinning the legs will need seems like a super pain. I didn't think they would be that weak... maybe the post holding up the middle is an easier way to go. I figured I'd need some pinning but I was thinking more like just the leg & arm joints.

i pinned my legs in after the fact. then i tipped the exposed pins with a few more spikes i had spare from some nid kits.

The legs will bend under the weight. I cut a circular base out of hard board, using a Dremel tool and a circle cutting attachment. Then I used a rubber rock mold and two part epoxy resin to make a large rock. Glued the rock to the circle base and used a 1/4" brass rod to attach the Heirophant. The rod, resin, and mold were all bought at Hobby Lobby. And enjoy the look on your opponents face when the big beasty starts recking stuff. Me and a buddy played a 40000 point game of Apocalypse on three tables. We put the Phant's on a table by themselves with 7000 points of Guard tanks, One died, one survived unscathed, One immobilized weaponless Baneblade left! Good times.

that looks great, thanks for the pics. how tall is the rod? Does the model wobble a lot?

I would probably build up some COD building pieces around the rod to hide it, or did you need the rocks like that for extra support?

Nah, it doesn't wobble much at all. The rod is approximately 8" long, which is about 2" into the heirophant and 2.25" into the base. The base is about 2.25" thick and quite stable. I actually use the top vent on it's back to pick it up between thumb and forefinger to move it around. You're welcome.

It's a cool model but I always found that the actual fighty bits (head and weapon arms) were ridiculously small compared to the body. Forgeworld could definitely have another go at Tyranid titans and MC's, the trygon was nice but that's been nicked!

To your question though, lol, sorry for digressing, from what I gather the peg in the ribs is definitely the safest and most stable way to go about it.
