I was wondering what kind of hangers-on humans a space marine company would have in tow. obviously there would be some sort of mechanicum adepts or even human ones to oversee distribution of ammo and weapons, and perhaps a team of cooks and chefs to feed these hulking brutes but what else do you think would be neccesary to follow a company in order for it to get to battle ready and fully armed?

Do the marines fix their own armour for example?

is there much paperwork that needs be done around them? I wonder

It has been varified by John Hurt that the Ultramarines are indeed the greatest space marine chapter.

Now to the serious stuff.

I would say your right in saying there would be cooks. For the ammunition I'd say humans overseen by department munitorium staff. I think that the tech-priest along with servitors could do the armour but then again, there may be a few human mechanicum adpets to do that.

For the paper work bit, well, this is the imperium. The grand temple of burucracy where vital information goes missing under all the other information or people miss name things and for tens of thousands of years obitial assults are made in vehicles which have been named as something there not.

Your more or less correct, they'll have their own support staff, munitions would be regulated by the chapter itself, not sure on paper work but they'll have chapter scribes for that sort of thing. As far as I'm aware each marine is responsible for the maintanance of their own equipment but if it's badly damaged they'll take it to the master of the forge or a techmarine.

I'd say the following:

Ammunition: Department Munitoriam Staff
Food: Chapter's cooks, other non-combat staff
Repairs: Marine services his own armour. Techmarines for larger repairs and vehicles.
Paperwork: Administratum staff
Could possibly contain other staff, possibly Guardsmen, to complete other errands, such as organising and delivering small items to the Marines.

Chapter organization points at 1000-2000 chapter-serfs plus some hundred servitors.
Ammo and fuel, repairs, Food , Crews for spaceships, scribes to deal with the adeptus terra,
may completley be responsibilities of non-Space marine personnel.

If look in the SM codex, there's an organisation chart for the Ultramarines, I believe it shows around 2,900 Chapter Serfs.

Serfs are raised from those who fail Space Marine entry and are retained as slaves... They tend to be treated well and are specialists:

Artificers (highly skilled artisans) look after and work on armour, adepts do all the various administrative tasks (in the Ultramarine's case, the chapter Lords over several planets which must obviously be administrated) aaaand then you have individuals like navigators and astropaths serving with the fleet, not to mention the Servitors that fulfill tasks befitting to them within the fleet (such as manning weapon turrets).

other chapter servents would be the general "go-fors" and people doing small tasks.

SWs have large quantities of bondsmen who are also pretty good at fighting too, and they make killer beer

Cooks to make pizza, chips, beer, burgers, enchiladas, and did i mention beer?

dancing girls (SW omnibus mentions this)
