Hey guys,

Newb that I am, I've been playing my monolith so that it can pretty much face towards the opponet's edge of the battlefield and move it's 6" in any direction without pivoting. I guess this was simply a "real life" interpretation since there is no real weapon LOS arc limitation. Now that my friends and I are getting down to the finer points of the rules, I'm trying to get out of any bad habits. And my question is, do I need to pivot so that my necron's portal door faces the direction of travel? I guess a fairly obvious stickler answer would be yes, but it just seems so unnatural. Also we play terrain-heavy games and pivoting itself usually ends up smacking into any terrain.

No, you do not. The rules do not require you to move in a "Forward" direction for any movement other than Tank Shocks/Rams.

Does the Monolith have a clearly defined "front" (visually or in the rules)?

A new day, a new time zone.

Yes, it does.

To address the op, vehicle facing has no effect on direction of travel. They can move forward, backwards, side to side, all without turning an inch.

To clarify that a little... The rules never clearly define a direction of travel for vehicles, which does lead to the interpretation that they can move in any direction you like.

There is a rather clear inference from the vehicle movement rules as a whole though that the intention is for vehicles to move in a forwards direction, and that's the way that most people (at least from my experience) actually play it, not least because it's also the natural assumption.

Having said that, some players also house rule that non-skimmer vehicles move forwards, while skimmers can sideslip with no problems at all.

The lack of concrete rules in this really puts this (if you're going to play as being able to move in any direction) as a 'talk it over with your opponent' issue if you want to avoid running into issues.

Bear in mind as well that, while it may or may not make any difference to movement, the facing of the monolith will matter when you try to send troops through it...
