Under the Vanguard listing it states;

"Any model can replace his bolt pistol and/or chainsword with:"

Various options

then it states under;

"The Sergeant can replace his power sword with:"

Various options

I want to make sure I understand this correctly. The Sergeant can take an Infernus Pistol (Replacing his Bolt Pistol using the Any Model caveat) AND a Glaive Encarmine (Replacing his Power Sword using the Sergeant option). This is not unlike the Vanilla dex, which allows the Vanguard Sergeant to do something similar. Correct?

Correct.

Just remember there is no point in the Glaive as it is 2 handed, which means you lose your bonus attack, making the re-roll a bit useless.

Eh, I don't know I didn't think of that. I guess the 2 handed weapon thing threw me. So essentially that leaves 3 builds;

PW + Infernus (3 base attacks)
PW + BP (3 base attacks)
Glaive + Storm Shield (2 base attacks, 3++)

Thanks!

No. Because any model can replace the bolt pistol with…

The VV Sarge has a Bolt pistol so he too can replace that with a lightning claw (or whatever) and he can replace his Power Sword with a lightning claw (or whatever).

So the sarge has all of the choices as well. They separate the sergeant's power weapon entry in the codex because the sergeant can replace his power weapon for CC weapons at 15 points less than the other VV.

Hmm, I don't know. Under Wargear it reads;

Power Armour
Bolt Pistol
Chainsword (the Sergeant has a power sword instead).
Frag and krak grenades

Emphasis mine.

Then, under the options menu;

"Any model can replace his bolt pistol and/or chainsword with:
List of various options"

Then another entry;

"The Sergeant can replace his power sword with:
List of various options"

So, while he can swap his bolt pistol for one item from the first options menu, I think it forces him to select a specific item for the power sword (As he lacks the chainsword to swap for another item). Or am I reading that incorrectly?

He can trade the power weapon for any other close combat weapon. He cannot swap the power weapon for a shooting weapon - that is the only restriction. So he cannot have two shooting weapons.

Any (any includes the sergeant) can swap the bolt pistol for:
hand flamer
plasma pistol
infernus pistol
power weapon
lightning claw
storm shield
powerfist
thunder hammer

All but the sergeant can swap the chainsword for:
hand flamer
plasma pistol
infernus pistol
power weapon
lightning claw
storm shield
powerfist
thunder hammer

The sergeant can swap the power sword for:
hand flamer
plasma pistol
infernus pistol

power weapon
lightning claw
glaive encarmine
storm shield
powerfist
thunder hammer

So The VV Sergeant can swap his bolt pistol for all pistol or pistol like ranged weapons (like a hand flamer) and any close combat weapon other than the glaive encarmine. He could also swap his pistol for a storm shield.

He can swap his power sword for all close combat weapons other than a chain sword.

He can swap his bolt pistol for a thunder hammer and his power sword for a thunder hammer if you wanted too.

A regular VV could have two hand flamers (no they are not twin-linked).

The reason that they split it off is because they are giving you a power-sword-discount on the sergeant's CC weapon options. He can swap his bolt pistol for a Lightning claw for XX pts. and he can swap his power sword for a Lightning claw for free. So to make the Sergeant a double lightning claw model is 15 points less than making a VV with Bolt Pistol and Chain sword into a 2 LC model.

So a 5-man VV squad with a 2LC sergeant and 4-plain VV is 130 points and a 5-man VV squad with an unmodified Sergeant and a 2LC veteran and 3-plain-VV is 145.
