Ok, I'm in the process of building a list and I have 60 points left over. Brain starts purring and the first thing that comes to mind is spore mines.

After thinking about it I'm intrigued, but there is something that is putting me off. If I deploy them in a group is there anything stopping my opponent deploying right next to me with a vehicle with more than AV10 and blowing them up before they do anything? I'm gonna have a skim through my rulebook tonight when I get home, but I can't think of a rule that would prevent such a thing from happening.

So, any help?

Nope. The Opponent can do that just fine.

Spore Mines are pointless and if you have 60 Points spare, you are better off buying a Biovore, some TL Deathspitters for your Spods or just extra Biomorphs.

That's what I was thinking. My zoanthropes are in desperate need of a spod me thinks.

Although surely in dawn of war the 18" restriction still applies...in which case 1 in 3 missions they get some use.

xD Yeah, you can use them to make it so nothing of theirs can deploy

Sounds interesting. Can also use them to screen units from assault I suppose. Might just go with 2 and a spod for the zoanthropes.

Gwar is wrong you are not allowed to deploy within 1" of the spore mines. He could surround them with vehicles of course. Obviously for DoW it is just made of win particularly if you'e going with a whole reserve army forcing them into the same tactic (though you can use HC to ensure you arrive in bulk).

I am going to be running a list with some spore mines for an upcoming tournament, I plan on using them to control my opponents deployment, for 30 points you can scare infantry to NOT deploy in one sector, or influence tanks to be there.

enemy has an obvious spot for devs/long fangs/havocs/platoons? slam some Spore Mines there to disrupt the first turn and give your main line a free turn to move up.

Rules Quote Please. You are breaking the Tenets of YMTC by just saying I am wrong without backing it up in rules.

While Dawn of War has one, no other standard Mission Deployment has a Restriction on how far you must deploy from the enemy.

Nope, deployment is not movement therefore the 1" rule does not apply

You may not place them on top of the spore mines..

So you could deploy an artillery unit on the top floor of a ruin?
It can't move up there, but if you say that deployment isn't movement, then it hasn't moved up there, it's just been deployed there.

You could deploy a Land Raider up there too, if you wanted.

Won't be able to move, but would look awesome.

As others have said, this is perfectly fine. Imagine a superlifter carrrying them up there - too dangerous to move during the battle, but beforehand why not?

If you insist deployment is movement then vehicles take dangerous terrain tests if you deploy them in terrain.

Personally I would use the spores to force your opponent to deploy differently than they would have otherwise...they still have use...making them put a tank where its better to put some troops...such decisions can make or break the game. 3 squads of 3 mines can give you the tactical advantage you need: granted that you are not using the fast attack slots for other things.

spore mines can be used to prevent infiltrators from deploying, they deepstrike before deployment and aren't effected by deployment rules, but infiltrators cannot deploy within 12-18" of them, so spending like 10-30pts on 1-3 individual mines can prove useful.

blowing a full 60 is kind of silly

restricting deployment with them doesn't work because all it requires is a tank to be within 1" of the mines and they will explode on the first movement phase (no matter whose it is) and will not damage anything.

My point was not to damage anything...but rather to make your opponent deploy differently so that they don't damage anything.

Spending under a 100 pts to make you opponent deploy in ways not to their advantage...this is something I have found to be greatly effective.

You are right on with the infiltrators as well.

Exactly

If I set up spore mines in such a way as to make you deploy one of your tanks to pop the mines, then they have done their job. Essentially I deployed your tank in this situation.

If I set up spore mines in such a way as to make you not put your lootas/long fangs/devs/havocs/platoons in a specific spot, then they have done their job. Essentially I stopped your optimal deployment and wasted at least 1 turn of shooting from your fire support while you either blast the mines apart, or move into position.

Well yeah, there are quite a few times when spore mines could be very good.

1. if the army is low on short range weaponry and no vehicles, forcing them to shoot the mine or eat the blast
2. if the army has a unit that is forced to charge the nearest enemy (space wolves, angels)
3. any other case when the enemy has special things they want to do that requires(or doesnt) enemy units to be nearby. Deepstrike, infiltrate/scout, some psyker powers, ect.
4. if the enemy is heavily assault based (daemons?)
