Subject: FLGS for WHFB in Maryland?

Hi,
I'm looking for a FLGS to play fantasy. Unfortunately, the Iron Fist League's regular stores are too far away for me (I'm in Columbia, MD) and I'd prefer not to join up with the Inner Circle. I've been playing at the GW's, but I would love to find a "home" store and a group of regular fantasy gamers.
Any suggestions for a FLGS in Maryland that might fit this description, post 'em here!
Thanks,
Steve / RiTides

Games and Stuff in Glen Burnie is about the only store I know of near you, and I don't know what their turnout is on weekends or week days. Call them up and talk to Matt. The Inner Circle does seem to have a presence there, but you don't have to join the club to play at the store.
If you are willing to drive, give Dream Wizards in Rockville a call. Again, I don't know what the turnout is on the weekends. It seems to me alot of FLGS prefer hosting card gamers on the weekends rather than wargamers, because there is less upkeep and more money to be made from them.

Thanks for the tips, General Hobbs! I was thinking to avoid Games and Stuff due to the IC...
Dream Wizards is about the same distance away for me, I hadn't heard of it before! It does look like they might emphasize card games... but I'll give them a call or stop by to see if they have some tables.
I'd have to get on the Beltway to get to them, so it would definitely be a weekend thing (to avoid D.C. rush hour traffic).
Are there any other possibilities?

Beltway to 95, go north until you see Deleware in rearveiw mirror. Take 452 north to RT 1. Turn left, go 1 block. Go inside big "mall o' doom", find Superman, enter store, pick out a table. Get crushed by my Throg army. Only 1.5 hours of driving to experience the joy of "copious vomit". )

Lol . I am definitely making it up to your store soon, mikhaila... just looking for the right time I guess! I don't want to show up and have no one to play after the drive...

Dream Wizards in Rockville used to be my old haunt back in the day.
From my understanding, the Tabletop Wargaming at that store has steadily shifted focus to Warmachine/Hordes, though if my friend's commentary still holds true, there's still a fair bit of 40k that goes on there. Fantasy was never quite big there, though the older gamers do bring out some WFB stuff periodically. My friend does put out the disclaimer that they tend to run a bit more on the 'competitive' side of gaming, however, if you're looking into more casual gaming.

Thanks for the insider tip, Jin! I'll check them out... there's also a flyer for a Hobbytown USA posted in the Arundel Mills GW, although I'll have to go in and see if they actually have table space, or are just selling models/supplies.
I'm a-okay with competitive gamers... as long as they're nice . The daemon player that beat me in that local tourney I went to a few weeks ago was a great guy even though he thrashed me... and I actually prefer that type of player to some degree, as they tend to know the rules correctly

Yeah....Keeping in mind this is all second-hand information, there's a reason my friend isn't really too keen on picking up WFB there. Mind you, this guy is a really laid back and fun guy to hang out and play against.

Ah, got it... where does your friend play fantasy now, if not there? I'll still probably check it out, but thanks for the heads up!

Hobbytown frederick has a lot of space that 'CAN' be used for gaming. The major question is 'IS' it being used for gaming.
They have a pretty awesome RC car racetrack up there and some side rooms used for parties, games and other stuff. But I couldn't tell you a schedule of when wargaming happens there and I have never seen a wargaming game going on there.
That being said, fantastic model resource, pretty decent selection of wargaming models as well as stuff for regular models and scratchbuilding. Well-stocked and always has everything I need.
It feels like in MD, wargammers are all ghosts until a tourney pops up and then people come out of the woodwork for the event. And once it is over, I never see these people again. On weekends, It feels like there isn't a single store in MD doing wargaming except GWs.

Thanks for the tip, nkelsch! I'm going to be working in Frederick (starting Monday ) so I'll definitely stop by the Hobbytown there!
I know what you mean about people only showing up for tournaments... I have been barely scraping up games of fantasy (mostly playing GW staff for a league night they were hosting this past month) but I went to a tournament a few weeks ago, and there were 20 of us, and they said normally they would get closer to 40...
Dreadnought96- I think you've been misinformed

It's been very odd....not just for fantasy. I see fewer 40K players, and no LotR players. I've heard the Bunker has been empty....I suspect the economy is alot worse in Maryland then they are letting on. Also, its not like GW has been doing anything to endear itself to the GW fans. Indeed, some of the behavior I've heard indicates they are still trying to drive veterans away from stores, including the Bunker, and still concentrating on newbies.

General Hobbs- We've had this discussion, but if we could keep it out of this thread, I'd appreciate it.
Any other possible stores for fantasy? I went by both the Bunker and the GW store in Arundel Mills today- both only had two games of 40k going, even though Arundel had a fantasy Mega Battle scheduled on their calendar.
I'm going to mikhaila's store for a tournament this coming weekend, and after that I'll might try out Dream Wizards. Are there any Iron Fist league members on this side of D.C. that might know of a place for fantasy, or be up for getting together on this side of the beltway?

I checked out Dream Wizards today, and it's cool! My Thursdays are booked right now, but I'll probably be trying to get a game there on Thursdays in the summer.
Next I will check out Hobbytown in Frederick at nkelsch's suggestion. If they have a gaming night, this would be even more perfect, since I'm working in Frederick now.
Any more suggestions, put 'em here!

If you're not strictly looking for a store and don't mind playing at other people's houses, etc. Ineptus Astartes runs out of Columbia, MD. We hang out a lot at the new Columbia Palace store, but play frequently at each others houses, etc. Always friendly, never overly competitive, and it's always come and go as you please. With the new 8th edition rules just coming out, we're going to be doing a lot of re-learning, so we're always interested in having other WFB players on hand!
