Right, so a situation that came up recently with my Guard and a friend's shiny new Blood Angel army. Marbo charges a Librarian with Sanguine Sword, and since this is the beginning of the Assault Phase, he uses Sanguine Sword to get S10. Thing is, he rolls snake eyes, fails his invuln, and dies as the libby only had one wound at that point. My friend argued he still got his attacks, while I argued that since the RAW effect of the power is that the model attacks at S10, that it worked but the model could not strike as he was now dead. I had to let him attack (naturally gibbing Marbo) since he got annoyed (even though I proposed a roll-off and I won) and it was a friendly game, but still.
What should have happened?

Yes, but consider how awesome it would be to commit seppuku with a powerfist. |

He should have died without getting his attacks, assuming he failed his invulnerable save and/or the reroll.
I like how he agreed to the roll off and when he lost decided he did not like that.

Well, the player in question hates rules-lawyering. He was objecting to what he saw was a trivial issue. But in any case, thanks for the clarification.

He should have died before making any attacks.

Ironic, since he was the one actually "rules-lawyering" in this instance.

If he accepts a roll-off and then disregards the result... I'd stop playing him at that point, as it's really no longer a friendly game. It doesn't matter who's right, he's getting a little too serious and is obviously not going to be reasonable about it. Platuan4th wrote: Ironic, since he was the one actually "rules-lawyering" in this instance.
Not really, as he wasn't using the rules to back up his claim. He just wanted his attacks, and threw a fit when presented with the RAW.

he dies before striking because
assault phase starts
psychic test taken
perils rolled
perils failed
wound taken
model dies
then blows are struck.

He does not get to attack and quite frankly, who cares? He intended to kill the librarian, and he died. Where is the argument?

That power is used at the start of the assault phase. So the librarian should have died before Marbo made his assault move.
|
In one game turn an Imperial guardsman can move 6", kill a few guys with his flamer, assault 6", kill two more guys with his bayonet, flee 12", regroup when assaulted, react 6", kill one more guy with his bayonet and then flee another 12".
So in one game turn an Imperial guardsman can move 42" and kill more than 5 people. At the same time a Chimera at top speed on a road can move 18"... |

Why even cast sanquine sword just for marbo, seems to be space marine overkill, since if I remember he doesn't have an invuln that's if I remember marbo right. Oh well I agree with everyone else, the model would of died from the wound before attacks.

This.
The start of the assault phase means before an assault is even declared, at the time he chose to use it, the actual rules say he has missed his chance.

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

it is not rules-lawyering nor a trivial issue, you roll for the powers before the initiative order is started, so he would die before anyone gets to attack even those with I 10, thus, the unit's initiative would never have been reached and therefore he wouldn't have been allowed to attack.
