Whether they were tears of joy...or tears of sorrow...I can't be sure yet.
As an avid Predator fanatic, I can't quite tell from the trailer if this movie will be any good, but here's what my analysis is:
Pros - Several good actors including Adrien Brody, Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus xD), and Danny Trejo.
- The setting seems to stay true to the last two films. Lots of places for classic Pred stalking as well as an eerie atmosphere.
- Finally getting to see the Predators on another planet rather than Earth.
- Glad they didn't do it on the "Predator home world" as seen in AVP2 (which by the way, makes no sense since the Predators are nomads.)
- Using the classic sounds from Predator and Predator 2 rather than the "lion" sounds or the "crocodile" grumble from the last two AVP films.
Cons - Laurence has proved he can play SciFi quite well with his role as Morpheus, and Danny Trejo is just an all-around badass that has a face for action, but Adrien Brody? I mean, I can't really see him in a role like this. The closest thing he's been in to this is King Kong, which, he was pretty good, but his role as Jack played on a more romantic basis; this role does not. And Topher Grace? Well let's just say I hope that with todays technology, the Predator does the same thing to him as he did to Dylan...except not with his arm...if you catch my drift.
- I understand the concept of Predator hunting parties (it was a major part in the comics), but this seems a little off. Did you see how many laser sights were on Adrien? I counted 15. Now, normally, Predator hunting parties are not that large unless it's a Youngblood trial (but those are only for Xenomorphs). I hope they don't think they can use the same mentality as Aliens where the concept "more Aliens = better action" was good, because Predators are more lethal (and prefer to be) alone than in large groups.
- The concept of the Predators abducting humans and putting them on a "game reserve" is creative (I'll give them that) but it seems kind of cowardly and un-Predator-like. One thing about Predators is that they hunt during the hottest, most unstable parts of the year. They hunt their prey in its environment, during the most hostile times. This increases the challenge and honor that may be brought on by doing it. Hunting prey on it's own terms and putting the prey at an unfair disadvantage...seems...just not Predator-like at all.
- The way the people are describing and setting up the Predators in the trailer seems...more like Aliens. I mean, look at it! Cold dark corridors, claustrophobic atmosphere, and walls being bent in as if something's breaking in, that's the Alien's turf, not the Predator. They're setting them up to be like mindless monsters who feed on our flesh. Whereas, in reality, they are intelligent, methodical hunters. It just seems a bit too much like a monster movie...where it should be more of a SciFi Action like the original.
I dunno, I have a feeling this movie is going to be the worst of the Predator series, but something's telling me it'll be a step up from the AVP films. Rodriguez's work has been hit and miss.
Preliminary review from what I alalyzed from the trailer and synopsis: 6.4/10
I am a big Predator fan, so of course I hope this will be excellent. Unfortunately, after the last two AvP films (which by rights should have been AWESOME, but as far as I can tell, weren't...although I've only seen the first one, I haven't exactly heard much good about the second) I am pretty skeptical.
This looks FIVE TIME BETTER than any of the Aliens vs Predator movies so far.
What would make me feel good is if they can somehow make it feel like the good 'ole days of the Predator, when Arnie wasn't dodging voters and Danny Glover was revelant.
I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.
I'm kind of sick of hearing "Why Topher Grace?! He's not badass!" in regards to this movie and about the same regarding the choice of Adrian Brody.
This isn't a bunch of special forces in the middle of a mission or hunting a Predator ala Predator 1/2.
This is Predators abducting what they see as "hunters" to hunt.
The reason I'm not upset about Topher Grace being in the movie?
Spoiler:
Grace is playing a serial killer, which works just fine when you look at most serial killers' behavior or their general characteristics. They're very rarely that distinctive in crowds and most of the successful ones blend into society very well.

Personally, I think this will be a step down from Predator 2 (Which IMO was better than Predator) but a whole lot better than the AvP films.
I agree with Darth Bob on the whole "bashing doors thing", but we don't really know that these were the predators for certain. There were obviously some other very alien and very nasty creatures on that reserve. (So either they were native or humans weren't the only game collected for this 'big' hunt). So whatever was after them in a 'mindless monster' way, may not have been a predator at all. On top of that, I think that the maze/labryinth of underground alleyways and chutes to be very much in kin with the whole kind of theatre one would want for an exciting, crowded, hemmed-in hunt.
As for 'kidnapping' humans being out of sync with a Predator mindset, I think it actually makes sense. This is not just humans that they've kidnapped, I think this group has been collecting all manner of dangerous creatures of all sorts and now they've brought them all together on this reserve to have a good ol' time.
In other news, I hear that they're already working on the sequel...

I have to say, just the fact that isn't AVP probably makes it better. AVP was crap because they tried to reinvent both aspects, in stupid settings.
Thats pretty much true. The guy is just pure awesome, both on and off the screen.
I think it looks like it could be pretty good. And I have to say that Adrien Brody CAN pull off the hard ass. I cant remember the name of the movie off hand, but he played a leader of a group that kidnapped a woman for ransom and he was a SERIOUS cut throat in that movie.
All I can say is....its about time they start making some Predator movies that dont suck ass. The Predator character is so friggin awesome that it should be impossible to make it suck, but thats hollywood for ya
these days it's getting harder for me to trust movie trailers, but I have to think this film is in good hands with Rodriguez at the helm. He has the penchant for violence and storytelling that could make this damn fun to watch...
of course, I suppose if you don't like his films, well...
