Greetings all,
A few questions came up recently as I faced off against my WoC roommate. The subject of challenges and characters/unit champions.
Now, according to the book, WoC Characters must issue challenges and may not refuse them.
And in the WoC FAQ, it was added (rather confusingly) that unit champions also must issue challenges, however they can refuse them (what, why so arbitrary?)
now, its not too bad when they're on their own, but when a Character (in this case an Exalted on a Juggy) and a Champion (Chaos Knight Champ) were in the same unit, and I issued a challenge to the unit, can the Hero pass the challenge to the champion? Or is that considered "refusing?" (which heroes may not do...)
thanks for any insight that might be shared...

If it simply says that you cannot refuse the challenge then I would say, yes, you can pass the challenge off to the Champion as the Challenge has not been refused.
To clarify in case anyone reading this is confused check PG 77 of the BRB, challenges are either accepted or refused, individual characters may not refuse a challenge so as long as someone accepts then no one has refused.
Good luck in future games!

Chaos characters CANNOT refuse a challenge. If there is a character in the unit, then SOMEONE must accept.

alright, I've gotten this from a few different sources as well. Thanks for the input lads. My roommate will be happy to learn that there is recourse to letting my Arch Lector stomp chaos lord face every time they end up together.

YOU issue the challenge. HE accepts with either his lord or his unit champion. He can do either with no penalties. After you kill the unit champion, he has no choice but to accept with his chaos lord in future turns. Good luck in future games!

actually the Character MUST accept the challenge, you cannot pass it on to the Champion to accept or refuse. also unless he took a war shrine the unit champion doesn't need to issue a challenge and can even decline one if he wanted.

The character does not have to accept the challenge. Per the FAQ, Chaos unit champions have to issue and accept challenges. The don't get to roll on the EoTG table if they kill an enemy character unless there is a warshrine. So, if a challenge is issued, either a chaos lord or a unit champion could take it. Either, with no penalties whatsoever.

GG,
You've got something to back this up? From the Warriors of Chaos armybook, page 43:
"Chaos models that may issue challenges must do so whenever they are able."
So, that includes champions.
Also:
"Furthermore, such is their thirst for glory that Chaos characters may not refuse challenges."
Refusing a challenge is different than allowing another character or champion to accept it.

Orkimedes is 100% correct here. Either can accept but none can refuse.

The FAQ is rather specific that a champion can refuse a challenge. If you had a big block of Marauders with a unit champion, he could refuse and go to the back.
In the specific case we're talking about, where the unit contains a champion and a character, the challenge can't be refused because of the character.

Noone is saying the challenge can be refused, however if you accept the challenge with tthe champion the challenge has NOT been refused.
Champion + Character == either can accept, but someone MUST accept as if the champion doesnt want to do it the Character is forced to.
