Been Around the Block
|
Greetings all!
Its been a long while since I posted anything and Im happy as a clam now that my long slumber is over.
Ive been lurking here every now and then but I havent really touched miniatures for a long while now - last time I played 40k I was 6 years younger!
That being said, let me clear some dust before the actual pictures
Back when I started give or take 12 years ago, I went after marines like pretty much everyone new to this hobby. I funded my hobby by painting miniatures to others, so much so that I managed to collect quite massive hordes of pretty much everything. I painted many armies and countless smaller projects and as time went by I realised that pretty much everyone was playing in tournaments with their painted armies except myself - I simply never had time to finnish my own projects since I was so swamped. It came to a point when the hobby itself started to taste like wood and it literally killed my motivation for painting or gaming.
So, I had kind of stopped the whole hobby after about 5 years and found myself new hobbies, but I never sold my stuff. I still got cabinets full of armies that are either half done or even in their original boxes.
Now, around 10 years after my initial purchace of my 1st full army, I had a sudden and most welcome spark to get painting again.
The initially Imperial Fists turned Star Hawks found a new shade of orange under my airbrush, and thus Emperors Hammers was born! I hope to add new pics when I finish off new stuff, and plan to paint atleast 1500pts of Space Marine -goodness.
So, heres the 1st batch of pics, I hope you fellas enjoy ;
It started as an experiment - the old dark purple scheme was painted with oilbased colours and as ive been painting alot of different stuff with my airbrush nowadays, I tend to use waterbased acrylics. This oldschool preda was the 1st mini I airbrushed with waterbased colours and was pretty happy about the results. I also found a perfect use for that fluorescent orange I bought!
Next up, 1st of my 2 razorbacks. The 1500pts army im making will have 2 identical Razorbacks. 2 identical Predators too for that matter, so dont fret - the purple tanks are there to show the transformation but sure enough they too will turn orange soon enough
Marine. Theres 16 of them in the final army, 10man + 5man tac squads and Cato Sicarius.
Finished 5man combat squad. I might end up spraying a coat of matte varnish on them as soon as I get my hands on a can of that stuff. I hope you fellas like the scheme Im going for here. I wanted something that is highly visible from a distance, so the army would be "tournament friendly"
I used some old dwarf shield glyphs as Chapter Icons and I think it works quite nicely.
Lastly I wanted to show you lot the 3 different looks my marines have had over the years. They started as Imperial Fists way back when, around year 2000 and after 4 years playing them yellow I opted for a darker look and named them Star Hawks. I never got them painted tough, and these 2 tactical marines from the 2 first armies are the only ones that were 100% finished. Sure, I got the basic colours airbrushed on but the detail work was something that never happened.
This year tough, things took a change for the better
Hope ya fellas hear from me soon!
-Innom

Looking awesome!
Only bit of criticism, the orange needs breaking up. Just do the detail on the chest piping and the aquilas, stuff like that, and they will be b-e-a-utiful.
That aside, the white looks crisp, but ruddy; it's all good.

They look superb, I would agree with space_potato though the torso's would benefit from being broken up with a different colour on the aquilla.
Other than that I must say that I'm shocked that orange can actually work for marines, you've executed the scheme well and the two colours contrast well. Its nice to see something different than the all metal bolters that a lot of folks seem to do these days as well.

Thanks for the feedback fellas The camera flash + the gloss varnish eat up alot of the shading, which is anoying :( On the WIP pictures you can see the shades of orange more clearly, as only the finished marines are varnished.
About the chest of the marines - you fellas are right, It would look better if I would have done the aquilas and what not in different colour. Thing is, those guys are put together with the enthusiasm of a 15 year old, so the glueing is intense Removing the bolters without doing alot of damage would be nigh impossible and for that reason I went the easy way out. When ive done more marines I might go back and try picking up the chest details, but the piping I am happy with. I used to paint the pipes and joints with metal colours when I was doing marines as a comission, but nowadays I like a more subtle aproach. If you pick up the pipes with, say dark metallic they will jump out from the minis like spidermonkeys - and spidermonkeys have fleas, no-one wants to have fleas.
Im rambling.
I try and have something else ready soon - untill then, have fun all

Maybe a bit of lining-in too, some nice dark lines between the orange would be very delicious

Apologies for a bit of self-necro, but the project is not dead or even close to it - just alot slower than I suspected
I got a bit of conversion frenzy going on and tought Ill show some results of my tinkering. I wanted new stuff for my marines but didnt want to buy anything else, so I started diving in my overflowing bitzboxes and so far have made these fellas :
first 2 marines of my upcoming 10man strong Sternguard unit. I will have yet another heavy flamer marine up and about soon and then the happy 10 will hop about with my new shiny Librarian using his gate of infinity.
My new shiny Librarian and Chaplain. I dont know how often the chaplain will roam around the battlefields but im especially pleased about the Librarian and I expect to see him on the tabletop quite often.
Last but not least my Techmarine with servo-harness and my "Tarantula"-class thunderfire cannon. These I ended up liking so much I doubt I ever leave them off the roster.
Hope you like the conversions feel free to comment too!

You've got an excellent use of bitz there man, certainly adds a lot of character to them without looking overdone.
I particularly like the thunderfire cannon, I've been thinking about how to approch the thunderfire cannon myself (I don't care much for the original) and your version is certainly an inspiration.
Nicely done, sir.

@TheFirstBorn : I used (and will use for the rest of the squad) the torso-plate from the marine weapons and ascesories sprue to give them that "tougher than tough" look and to unify them. Ill also use chaos marine bolters with the ammo feeds and added scopes to give their bolters a veteran feel. The sergeant has little viking-style wings on his helm made from a really tiny dark angel symbol I found amidst my bitz, dont know where its from tough. The powerfist is from a plastic terminator, tough I changed the actual arm to a power armoured one. The laurels im using on their right shoulder come from some old empire sprue, same as some additional tigh armour that everyone else except the sergeant has (you cant see it, but the flamer marine has them and so will all the bolter marines). The sergeant has another laurel on his knee from the terminator box and everyone has a small crux terminatus on the inner corner of their left shoulderpad that is also from the terminator box.
@dark6spectre : yes, the Heavy flamer is also from the terminator box I added an auspex top as a fuel gauge and grip from some old chain axe for the right arm.
@Xenith : yup plus alot of other bitz and parts, but the landraider sponsons are the most important bits for the conversion.
EDIT
@KaloranSLC, Tek, StasisNid95 and Kryppers : Thanks fellas! im glad you dig the tarantula, glad to give you fellas some inspiration
