'It is called the spire of hate by the hivers. The spire of hate.' The inquisitor said, rolling the words out without a hint of disgust, without a hint of emotion.
'It is here that you must go. I know you would all prefer a glorious death in His name than a lifetime guarding that cosy back-water I have saved you from.' Rathe Kistor intoned, his gaze set firmly in the distance. Around the giant mustering hangar the guardsmen eyed each other with unease, their pristine uniforms were stretched over large gluttonous bellies and soft hands gripped their lasguns uncomfortably.
'Eldar witches and slavers; His enemies one and all.' The inquisitor continued. 'You, the fine Regallis legio are His hammer, with which to smite them.' His stilted delivery finally belied his contempt for the men. 'Go then, and let none of you return until that tower is broken down and in pieces at my feet. Go!'
The legion began to trudge out to the beating of arco-drummers, their shiny armoured sentinels scouting noiselessly at the van. Commissar Cauge joined the Inquisitor on the observation ramp.
'A little hard on them, weren't you Rathe?'
'No. These piglets need it. His enemies never rest, so why should they, Commissar?'
'But they are a loyal legion! It is an impossible task you've set them.' Cauge said watching the ornate banners flutter delicately above the long lines of troops, snaking towards their doom.
'Yes, but they are more than mere men now; they have transcended that. They are now an inspiration for others to follow Commissar, greater than they could have ever imagined when they were processed into the Guard. Now Cauge, now, their name will ever have glory heaped upon its colours.
'Even the astartes, the Relictors even, have counselled against frontal assault. What hapens when the Regallis legio return defeated.
'There will be no defeat. No surrender. Like the Imperium they will not buckle.'
'How do you know this?'
'Because Cauge, if any man returns alive, they are to be shot on site by my arbites.' Raith said turning away from the glorious procession and to his waiting shuttle, 'They are worth more to me dead than alive.' He said, looking back over his shoulder. The Commissar smiled, knowing he still had much to learn from the great man.
