hey all; been looking around and haven't found this anywhere.

i've tried in the past to base my flying bases, on my land speeder storm and dark eldar raider, with modelling sand (the cheapy stuff you get in the GW hobby starter set) but i've found that even after the glue has set, the sand just peels right off the base; the glue doesn't seem to be sticking to it at all. just bought some new sand- Skale Scenics fine black gravel- and will be attempting to base my gargoyles after i have assembled them. How can i get it to stick on to the base properly? any help regarding the matter would be fantastic.
Cheers,
Ash

Personally, I put another coat of PVA over the top of the sand just to ensure that it sticks down fine.

Without a wash, however, it can look quite flat.

steel wool, sand paper. Wood glue. As an awesome quote I saw: "If you want to put glitter on your valentine day card, use white glue, if you want to make sure your basing stays in place, use wood glue."

Sand down the bases before gluing the sand to it.

If I'm scenery-ing up a flying base, I've just stopped using the actual base portion of the clear plastic. In most cases, the standard 40mm base is perfectly fine for jetbikes and land speeders, while one of the larger bases works well for anything bigger than that. Just drill a hole in the base and glue the clear "stick" into place.

As a bonus it lets you put the stick anywhere on the base, which helps offset balance issues.

For reference, check out images of the Tau battlesuits; GW encourages this as an option. Another example's in my gallery, though I used bent wire instead of the flying sticks.

I think most people water down their wood glue too so its not so lumpy.

You need to rough up the smooth clear plastic so the glue has something to grab onto. Alternatively you can use super glue to glue down the sand.

Super glue works flawlessly for me.

i've tried superglue for basing and didn't have much joy with it- could this be that the GW superglue is too thin? i'll have a try at using the wood glue since i'm sure i have some somewhere; i've got some spare bases on order so i'll try them when i recieve them, plus i'll get some better superglue (as i've found that my metal models fall apart with alarming regularity using the GW glue)

thanks or the help all
