Excluding paints and tools, how much would a brand new army of your choice cost you, if you walked into your local gaming store tomorrow?

Obviously this may vary a little, depending on what army you may be collecting - but I'd like to see how much you chaps think it costs.

Napkin math permitted!

AOBR boxes at what 500ish points of marines, 50$ max for another set of them to get to 1000. other odds and ends you could make an army for 300$ easy. Good, no. Army yes.

2000 Points space wolves:

3 packs gh
1 pack long fangs
1 pack assaut marines
1 pack wolfguard terminators
4 runepriests
1 pack wolfguard
droppod

~300 euro.
that was for a planetstrike game,so nevermind the weird army ^_^
and the space wolves boxes give you enough bitz to convert the assault marines and the long fangs ^^

I figure a decent 2k point army will run you a bit north of $300. Mind you, that's finding reasonable discounts (20% or for NOS, 40-50% for used). I think you've gotta be outta your gourd if you pay GW recommended prices.

The killer seems to be vehicles. Hard to find a good price on them new or used. Figure $25ish a pop for those (and can be a lot more depending on what you're looking at). By the time you get your transports and heavy slots filled, that's 2/3 of your cost right there.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Observations on complex unit wound allocation: If you're feeling screwed, your opponent is probably doing it right.

Looking back on my second army, my Deathwing...

1). Belial (made from a spare Terminator from the Assault Terminator Box, plus some extra bits, like a Chaos Lord cloak): $10ish
2). x3 Terminator Squads: $150
3). x2 Land Raiders (1 Crusader, 1 normal Raider): $114
4). Terminator Chaplain: $15
Total: $290-ish (you might use a different Belial than me)

Mech guard will cost you like 900$! Thats what amazed me about how all the mech guard lists at tournaments.. so much money spent by so many people for such an uninspired list

Might be a little hazy on the math, but when I put together my Steel Legion army (metal figs and Chimeras for every squad) back in 2001, I bought a package deal from the Warstore for like $300. It was somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,500 points, IIRC. It ended up being 40 Steel Legion figs, 6 Chimeras, a Hellhound, a couple Leman Russ', and a Sentinel squad. In today's money, I think that's around $550 for that particular list. Now, a metal army is a bit atypical these days, however, the tanks are still pretty standard fare. So, yeah, mech lists are pretty expensive if that's the route you want to go. I was actually pretty light on Leman Russ' and plastic Valks didn't exist at the time, so a 2,000 point list could potentailly top $800+ for mexh IG. That's a lot of dough...

That is sort of the point of me making this poll!

I'm interested to find out how much we would all pay for a brand new army, and then investigate just how much cheaper it is if we were to delve into eBay, craigslist, car boot sales, forum trading or buying from friends etc etc.

A mini investigation!

I could never simply walk into a store and buy and army like that. Each mini I make has to be unique and I am willing to spend money on it. A Terminator squad alone would set me back about £60

Armies:
(CSM/HH) - Iron Warriors; Death Guard; World Eaters; Night Lords
IG - Vestfalian Expeditionary
Force (Solar Auxilia - HH)
SM - Blades of Inaros (Homebrew)
DE - Kabal of Ouroboros

^Madness! You do like going above and beyond tho infil.

I dunno, I always look for bargains when I build, so I get eBay deals, second hand lots, donations, kitbashes etc.

My Eldar Force is about 2'000 I think all told, and that must have set me back quite a bit, as there's a lot of vehicles in there - let's hazard a guess at

£55 on troops (rangers +mail order ranger, DAs x2 Guardians x2)
£100 on wave serpents
£60 on prism/falcon
£100 on elites (spiders, banshees x2, dragons)
£30 on walkers
£20 on bikes
£50 on HQs (jetautarch, jetseer, seer council on foot)
Plus lets say a score on assorted other bits and bobs.

That's £435 right there. My guard army has been cheaper thus far, as there's a few donations and bashes in there.

Wowers. That's a lotta dough.

Looks like the average thus far is around £290ish for an army.

Lets get a few more votes, 100 is a nice round number (1000 is an even rounder number! ) and I'll crank out the maths and work out an average.

I'm in the 'more' crowd. I buy forgeworld upgrade kits, resin bases, and typically buy more models than I need so that I can do some conversions. I'm also unable to stop at 2k points.

What does this have to do with painting or modeling?

There is an attitude that not having an insanely optimized, one shot, six stage, omnidirectional, inevitable, mousetrap of an assassin list army somehow means that you have foolishly wasted your life building 500 points of pure, 24 karat, hand rolled, fine, cuban fail. That attitude has been shown, under laboratory conditions, to cause cancer of the fun gland.

How much money you spend on what you paint and model? Oh I don't know I'm clutching at straws now...!

I guess this topic would have been better suited in 'Dakka Polls'....although I had no idea that forum existed until I just checked. :(

Sorry about that!

An Idea i had for a deathwing army/ Red Scorpions army.

Belial (Forgeworlds Commander Culn) £12

3 Assault Terminator Squads with Red Scorpions Shoulder Pads. £99

3 Terminator Squads, with Red Scorpions Shoulder Pads. £99

2 Land Raider Crusader with Red Scorpions LAnd Raider Doors. £90

I purchased my Tyranids last year two Battleboxes, Hive Tyrant and Zoanthropes for £120. Of course those Battleboxes had Carnifex in them so it would cost a bit more now...

Marines I just get off ebay for about 50% of the price GW charge. On a good day you can get 1500 Point army for £50-£60. I purchased two of them when I started playing again!

Done!

I wanted to get around 100 votes, and that has been achieved. Thanks for all your feedback guys!

I stupidly left a 'More?' option, initially thinking nobody could ever spend that much on a 1500pt army, so I shaved off the top and bottom 6 results to give a selection of data from which I could find an average.

If my maths skills serve me well, this gives an average of....

£276.55 / $425.77 / €312.79

....for a 1500-2000pt Warhammer 40k army!

Now I'm off to try and build a Space Marine army, hopefully over 2000 points, for half of that amount!

Thanks very much guys.
