Subject: Metal...Gear?! UPDATE: paintin Rex
|

Stealthy Space Wolves Scout
|
So today my 1/100Metal Gear Rex by Kotobukiya finally arrived.
The packaging looks awesome:
And here are some of the sprues:
It also comes with Solid Snake, Liquid Snake and two versions of Grey Fox:
Tomorrow i'll start building the whole thing and i am really excited because i'm a huge Metal Gear fan and it's also my first "miniature" of that kind.
If there are any Gunpla people around here i greatly appreciate any help/comments on whats different to Warhammer regarding building and painting.
New pictures should be on tomorrow night ^_^

Do tell me where you got this. I've never played a Metal Gear game but I seriously want to. The mech designs are awesome, especially the REX.

glad you like it.
i bought it at hobby link japan, they have tons of awesome stuff.
anyways, i started building that monster and after 9 hours im finally done.
its made out of roughly 600 parts, whole different level than gw miniatures ^^
first of all, the manual is japanese only but thats ok
step 1: legs
followed by the feet
step 3: connect them
fully assembled legs plus armour. the 3 squares on the knees can be opened and hold the rockets
building rex' head
upside down:
backpiece holding more missile pods
middle part that connects the legs, head and backpiece
next step: connect everything
time for the rail gun and the radome
and finally, the finished rex with a space marine for size reference
i hope youlike it so far. im working on the color scheme right now and will start painting on monday ^_^

after a few days of planing and getting everything i need i finally started painting.
plan is a light grey with dark areas and heavy weathering.
i basecoated rex black and painted some areas scorched brown and used a sponge to apply orange followed by boltgun metal.
once that was dry, i applied hairspray with a brush and put salt on the still wet spray
next step was the base color
thats it for today, next update tomorrow ^_^

Really looking forward to seeing how the weathering turns out. I've had mixed results with the salt technique, but like your idea of applying it with a brush. I assume you stick the nozzle in a pot and spray until you've got enough fluid to paint with. Do you wash the brush in water?

thats exactly how i do it. main advantage is that you dont have to hurry when applying the salt and you can control where the hairspray is applied and also the amount.
i have a brush just for the hairspray and just wash it in water. the tip is not in perfect shape, but considering how much i have done with it so far its still really good
