Hi guys! I have very limited heavy support but lots of troops to field and I was wondering whats a better idea:

1. field all troops as veterans, and take two command squads to issue more orders.

2. field troops as infantry platoons with lower BS, but with the advantage of junior officers to issue orders.

3. field a combination of the two.

So I assume you want to footslog, since you're issuing orders. In that case, platoons are a better bang for your buck, and remember, you'll still have one command squad for orders.

thanx for the help! I really am not into footslogging all that much lol. I just pulled these 80 or so guard models out of the attic as I havent played in two years and I'm trying to bash an army together with what I have. would like to run tank heavy eventually. I was banking on the vets mostly because I have the extra points to spend and I needed to fluff out the army to accomodate the 1250 pts value we're playin with this weekend. my thought was that having an extra CCS would make up for the lack of PCS when issuing orders. I have enough models to run 6 vet squads and two CCS. only vehicles include a hellhound, and two scout sentinels(outflank?).

I also have limited heavy support and I normally play 1 full platoon and a squad of veterans with carapice and normally Sgt. Bastonne which means they can operate alone away from command squads. I sometimes put a heavy weapons squad in my vets or give them melta bombs instead, depending on who I'm killing.

If your infantry includes HWTs, I would deloy your men as a CCS and two 25-35 man platoons at first. If you get your hands on a couple chimeras, procure plasma/melta guns and form some veteran squads to ride in the chimeras. Eventually you'll find out which sort of troops choice fits you best. I know that the most competitive players online favour either all veterans in chimeras, or include 1-2 foot platoons as well.

I would recommend a hybrid, personally. Get some platoon squads in, so you can have the numbers. Platoons deal with hordes well. Especially if you pack them with flamers, and learn how to position second line squads with flamers while first line squads are getting mauled in assault.

But you really need to have some vets, so you can get plasma and melta into your list... which are really sorta important.

If it is possible try to keep heavy weapons out of your list, they are immobile... and don't work so well. Use Chimeras to increase mobility of your infantry, specifically the vets. Hide any heavy weapons you do end up taking behind your platoon. Take a OotF to curb the number of flankers. And augment your list with a smattering of tanks and other support vehicles.

All Veterans mounted in Chimeras is viable. You might not want two Company Command Squads as you can't issue orders to squads in transports.

All Infantry platoons on foot is also viable. You should be running blobs of 30+ each with Commissar with power weapon, power weapon sarges and heavy weapons either Las cannon or auto cannon. Straken or Creed to give them an assault boast is recommended. Skip the power weapons if not running Straken or Creed. 2 CCS might not be a bad idea if your not running Creed.

Combination of the two is also good. 1 blob of 30 infantry with comissar and heavy weapons to hold your home objective and Veterans in Chimeras to go get em works fairly well.

You really don't need that much heavy support. I keep my tanks single and don't use squadrons so only run maybe 2 heavies.

When I was playing my Blobs I always pictured my Sgts lined up getting ready to be shot. I think I lost more Sgts to Commissars than I ever did to the enemy.

I have had my commissar execute 3 out of 3 sarges. Especially awesome when the Commie and 1 sarge were the only remaining members of the squad. Just the mental image of the commissar offing the sargent to make himself feel better was totally worth it.

Ok so I finally got around to some gaming and the blob method turned out to work pretty good. I ended up taking all my 3 meltas and putting them in a vet squad and they bagged me a furioso dreadnought! medals all around.

You can't issue orders to units inside transports.

Also, the PCS order is not really an advantage. Short range, and very limited utility for the orders. The CCS more than covers that aspect.
