It has been getting me down lately that i've been losing consistently at 40k ever since the new tyranid codex came out. Last night I know i made some bad generalship choices (like allocating failed saves to a carnifex that when it died caused the other to be out of the venomthrope's bubble...it died to a mob of 'ard boyz. sad day)

I think i will take a break from the gaming aspect of the hobby until i can get my army fully (or more close to fully) painted. My heart just isn't in it right now after this most recent loss.

My question is, is that common? Who here has been on the brink of just giving up altogether because of a streak of bad luck?

Been out of the game for awhile, trying to find time to get back into it.

Nope, when I lose it just makes me dig in and play more to figure out what ewent wrong. I've lost my last three games in a row. Not much, I know, but that's a long losing streak for me. One game I misplayed (against Nids, oddly enough), the other two my dice went into the crapper, and nothing you can do about that.

I have. My games are always hit and miss. I have studied the books and know that i have a decent army list but i sometimes go months without winnigna game.

I find that my main problem is in deployment. by deploying badly i always but myself on the back foot from turn one.

An example - my last game was IW vs BA. I took a defiler to help get rid of the pesky assault squads i knew would be coming. Unfortunately in my haste to get a clear firing lane i had a massive brain-fart and managed to deploy my defiler boxed in with my own tanks and troops. So after the first shot i had to move it around my own army before it coudl charge - which it never did as it got popped in turn 2. ARGH!!!!

Stick with it, try to refine your list/tactics, and eventually you'll find a combo that works for you.

It's a game, I play it for the fun of it. When I know I'm going to lose a game, the game goes from "Grab Objectives" to "Lulziest Deaths".
Doesn't matter if my plastic soldiers lose, its still fun.

I have to agree with the above poster, sometimes losing can be pretty funny when you imagine some of the stuff actually happening. My case in point is a Harpy i converted from a trygon kit (top-notch i might add) swooping right next to a deff-rolla battlewagon, only to get steamrolled by the all-too-excited ork driver on the following turn. I just imagined the harpy looking to its left and going *squuuuuaaaak!* as a splatter of blood and acid stained the front of the wagon while the ork just honked his horn and kept going. hahaha.

I'm going to go with the above two posters. Much as I enjoy winning, I'm not all that concerned with it. It's a game, even if an expensive one, and you can't win all the time. I just like playing the game, win or lose. And it's always fun to make my opponent go, "Wait, he can do what?" when I used Njal.

Something similar happened to me once. I was playing orks, and the Nightbringer got a bit too close. Immortal Manifestation of Death 0, Hunk of Spikey Metal 1. Good times

Inside a pretty, pretty pain cave... won't you come inside?

If you're learning more about the game when you lose, then the tide gradually turns. My regular opponents are pretty much the top dogs in the area and they play 'Ard Boy type lists, not fluffy bunnies, so every game is pretty much hard as nails. I take my share of losses and draws, but I like to think I make them earn it.

Im right there with ya. I have lost way more than I have won.

I've lost to bad decissions, bad dice rolling, bad match ups for the lists I have made, and playing Necrons in general.

I LOVE the game to much to not keep at it, I have made awesome friends. So have I really lost?

To me there are 3 aspects to the gaming experience. The first is of course playing the actual game. The second is the assembling, painting, converting aspect. The third is the fluff army building part. When a game goes south I am only disheartened by 1/3rd of the hobby. I have the other 2/3rds to go back to and enjoy.

Your army will only grow stronger when it is tried and tested. Losing a game shows us what not to do in the future.

I think I can count the number of games I've won on one hand yet I always enjoyed my games. Mostly because Orks have a way of dying hilariously.

A looted wagon rolling a 1 on don't press dat running over a Wolf Lord (and killing him) only to be exploded next turn next to my other wagon.... which then repeated just that in the next turn (running over some bloodclaws) was just awesome. Then a dreadnought stepped on my Warboss...

Lose? That's all I know. I manage to pull last in every tournament I go to, and usually by a large amount. But I have fun, and learn my mistakes (such as bringing lists I know are bad).
My main problem? I'm one of the "Whoa, this looks sweet. I'll use it!" type of people, which usually bites me in the ass.

He
he.
I know what you mean. This however, makes it lousy when your big cool conversion gets crushed by las/railgun first turn...

When I lose really hard, i usually start pondering about what I did wrong, and try to come up with a better way to do it. It can be fun to lose, if it is still entertaining (as pointed out above). Normally one of the armies are orks

I just started, well a year ago, but I don't play very often because of school, so I only get to play on breaks, etc.

I picked Eldar to start with specifically because I would lose a lot. As has been said you need to learn from your mistakes, and being punished for making them will turn you into a better player, whereas if your mistakes are being cushioned and forgiven by 3+ armor saves you won't learn as much. Its always more fun to win, yes... but improving as a player by losing less badly is deeply satisfying as well- even if you don't win very often overall.

Every time I lose a game, I make sure to figure out what I could have done better, and every time I win a game I wonder what my opponent could have done better, either through list building, or tactical errors.

Its like that movie Revolver... "you only get smarter by playing a smarter opponent"

My Grey Knights are shelved indefinitely. I know it's only a game, but games are only fun when you stand a chance at winning. :/

So, how many losses are we talking about here? 10? 100? Just curious how many it is, that it makes you want to give up playing.

Not so... The Game is fun because you can't win. HA yes, you read that... i lost the game :(

Anyway, Winning has never been an important factor for me in Wargaming. Video gaming on the other hand...
