Mephiston has the special rule transfixing gaze, which lets him pick a single IC that he is in base contact with, induce a LD-4, and if successful, Mephiston may reroll dice to hit and to wound the enthralled target.

In armies that have an HQ retinue (Take DE for example) The HQs have retinues - in which the IC cannot be targeted. While Mephiston can cast it on the IC in the squad, he cannot roll to hit and wound against the IC; it goes against the squad, and Transfixing Gaze doesn't give permission for him to reroll against a squad or unit, just an IC. But...he can't target an IC in a retinue.

Thoughts?

Yup, it usually says they don't have IC status until their retinue is destroyed. I assume the same would be true for Dante as well

You cannot pick out the IC, therefore it is a complete waste of time.

As said by volkov, IC's with true retinues aren't even ICs until the retinue is killed, they are just upgrade characters, so a model with a retinue cannot be the target of Transfixing Gaze.

So not even the -4 Leadership can be applied to the character in that situation.

Correct. Your Lelith cannot be picked out because she is Old Skool and has a Bitchin' Retinue!

Aww...I didn't know this. I got Transfixing Gazed the other day, and this didn't occur to me until just now.

Actually, it depends on how Mephiston's rule is phrased. If it says any model with the IC rule, it would still work, retinue or not. If it just says IC, then no.

It says "a single enemy independent character in base contact."
An IC with a Retinue counts as a Upgrade Character until the Retinue Dies, where it starts counting as an IC again.
