I've been thinking long and hard about what codex to use a 'Alpha Legion'. Like many people I'm sure, I've recently read The Horus Heresy - Legion and I've been lured. I would love to start with them but I do not really want to use the Chaos Space Marine Codex, as it stands.

I like the idea of using cults but I could not find an army that would suffice both Cultists and CSM. After much searching though I've discovered the old Lost and the Damned Codex and I love it.

I'm just really wondering whether anyone has attempted something like this before and could give me some advice on this front, so painting, modelling and tactics for the Lost and the Damned Codex (And how i could keep this in line with the background)

It's old and essentially not supported/not used anymore.
Legal? I don't know.

Every game would have to be opponent consent because if you wanted it to mesh with the RECENT CSM codex, there are a bunch of things that you'll have to go over with your opponent.

/shrug, I suggest just using one of the MEQ codicies that are out...SW/BA/CSM/C:SM/DA/BT...etc.

I would just suggest using the CSM codex simply.

2-3 Rhino squads and load up on chosen, easy-peasy.
Or
C:SM and have scouts as the infiltrators and then have rhino squads. Maybe even Siccarius to give one tactical squad infiltrate.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

You could just use C:CSM. As Sanctjud said, load up on chosen. My advice would be to make some cultists and run them as summoned daemons.

As I play at my FLGS with a group of regulars, I do not so much mind if the rules are OOP. And as I forget to say before, yes, I will be 'meshing' these with the current CSM codex.

If I was not overly clear, I wanted to see if anyone had similarly used these rules as stand in's for any army for that matter. I really don't fancy using any other MEQ army or CSM solo.

Use two Force Organization charts, essentially two separate army lists, one Codex: Chaos Space Marines (Chosen heavy), and Codex: Imperial Guard using Penal Legions to represent your large hordes of angry brainwashed fools.

Use Codex Demonhunters.
The Inquisitor/GKs are the true Alpha Legion. The guard or inquisitor escort units are the cultist/spies.

Inversely use the IG with GK allies for a more appropriately proportioned list.

The advantage is that your Alpha marines will feel more in line with fluff, like Marines. Very tough one on one, rare, and expensive.

Let me make this loud and clear.

I am not asking what codex to use. No.

I am asking if anyone has had any past experience using LatD and for modelling and painting tips.

Again, not, I repeat, NOT, what Codex would be good.

LATD codex will have to be tweaked to be workable with the new chaos codex, but you wouldn't be using it for tournaments anyway.

LATD was an awesome codex to represent multiple, easily tailored visions. It is indeed workable. Look to the modeling forum for better posting on the modeling aspects.
