I have a question about assaults.

Over the weekend I played in a game where my Death Company with Lemartes flew into an assault with a mob of orks. Lemartes went first, cutting down a few or the orks. Then it went to the Death Company. Because some of the orks were dead and had been pulled from base-to-base contact with the Death Company, it was argued that the Death Company that were no longer in base contact couldn't make attacks.

I wasn't sure if that was how it worked. I thought a Squad got to make attacks for all that were engaged from the start of an assault. It was then argued that regardless, Lemartes (using the old PDF rules mind you) was an independant character attached to the squad, so he functioned as an entirely different squad in combat. I know that independant characters can be picked out in assaults even if attached to the squad, but wasn't sure on this (that'd mean there would be two seperate leadership rolls, and that's not right).

In a similar situation, if two squads assaulted an enemy between them (squads A and B on the left and right, and C in the centre), and at the end of combat one of the squads was no longer in base-to-base, I know that that squad is still considered in combat and must pile in. With that in mind, I could see that if with two seperate squads one cut down enough the other couldn't attack that'd work, but not with an independant character attached to a squad.

A bit confusing, I know, but I'm curious to how that plays out. I know it is a bit of a muddled post, so if clarification on the situation is needed, don't hesitate to ask.

Thoughts?

1) Incorrect, this is determined afeter all Defenders React, but before any attacks are made.

theyre thinking of 4th ed.

2) ICs MUST be in base to base with an enemy (again, at the start, after Defenders React) model in order to attack, and only those models in b2b OR within 2" of a mdoel in b2b with the IC can attack the iC

So if Lemartes kills all models in B2B with him, noone is attacking him that round unless they were within 2" of one of the removed b2b models *and* they are not also in b2b with members of the DC.

Lemartes isn't an IC.

I think the OP mentioned that this was the old PDF codex, so possibly he was an IC at that point?

Thanks a lot, guys. That's what I thought.

Problem is that both me and my opponent have lots of old ghost rules from past editions floating about in our heads, and it gets confusing at times.

Yeah, 4th ed is still in most peoples heads, and the removal of the "engaged zone" from 5th ed has caught a lot of people out!

Try reading the 5th edition rules out loud. That will help clear out the old rules.

It's also a great way to get a non-gamer friend / son / daughter etc to go to sleep if they have insomnia....
