So the debut trailer has arrived, first impressions?
It looks like the squad have had their armour stripped down, this is potentially from some rumoured jungle environments or perhaps just to reinforce the rag tag nature of the gears since their last stronghold fell.
I'm going to get this out the way. Female Gear. The way she is represented is stupid, if anything she should just have the same kind of armour with a feminine face. Basically just boobs in metal for the 14 year old boys. RAGE! It's like people think it's sexist if women don't appear in the story as main combat roles!
Lambent, tentacle craziness. Not to sure how you are supposed to get in close and finish that in a "gears" way. Maybe a bit too outrageous for the universe?

This has been the norm in PnP RPGS, video games and anime for a long time. People are long past complaining about it. Gears is a ridiculously over-the-top game, so what did you expect? Marcus is XBAWKS HUEG, Cole's muscles look like they've been inflated, and, of course, CHAINSAW GUNS. It's like a ludicrously gritty and grimdark comic book.
Which is a good thing.

I disagree. I feel the need to complain about it/in general whenever opertunity arrises.
Plus I see Gears as an 80's action movie, for example "Preadtor". Sure there is a woman in "Predator" but she isn't really needed and doesn't drive the story. It's a manly affair.
Even "Aliens" is a good example of how women should be portrayed in a non sexual manner while retaining interest and fitting into the genre.
I don't see an issue with how they represented the woman. Isn't that the chick from HQ anyways, and pretty much been exactly how she's looked since Gears 1?

I thought it might have been Anya, but that it would be ridiculous.
She is essentially a secretary, who isn't too keen on combat. In the first gears she bricks herself when a small group of locust begin firing on delta squad, while she and Hoffman are there to inform them of their mission.
It's EPIC's product afterall, so they can do what they want.
I like the character of her in gears 1/2, as the constant intelligence person who is back from the frontline. Perhaps it shows what a desperate state they are in, or perhaps its just to get tits in armour.

The "secretary" was a tactical advisor operating from the headquarters of the COG.
The headquarters and the nation in question which was home to the COGs you fought alongside of went down in a massive explosion. Pretty sure this is going to be a "For all the marbles" styled campaign with annihilation of the Locust and the Lambent being the end goal.

And I agree on anya too, the Gears 2 ending showed the humans last bastion getting sunk, there isn't anywhere else to go, so what would you do? Stay as an intelligence officer for a pretty much deceased army, or fit in the with the guys who'v kept themselves alive so far through sheer badassedry. Easy choice if you ask me.
Screw it, while I'm shaking my head now at the hamminess of it all, in a year from now I'll be getting this game and playing through it in coop while shouting "WHERES MY WIFE" and giggling like a little girl at the Cole Train.
If you justify her being a combat role you need to take into account that she has had no training. Anthony Carmine in Gears 1 had been with alpha squad for some time, and he got easily wasted. His brother lasted through some intense fights considering he was just out of basic, then got wasted. Gears drop left, right and centre. Anya is not qualified to run with the "big boys", there will be a base of operations for them to work from. Unless this trailer is depicted at the end of the game and Hoffman, Prescott and the two Carmine brothers are all dead then I don't see the possibility of this situation.
If anybodies read the books or comics, you'll realise that women fighters aren't that uncommon.
In the comics, we have Alex, a kickass chick who is sexy but in a way that doesn't make it just nerd bait, and she is also a "survivor" is the best term, of the Birthing Farms, so she has plenty of reason to hate the COG, but she fights for them anyway.
In the books, we have Berni, an older veteren of the Pendulum Wars who has since rejoined the COG so that she can spend the last days of her life amoungst people that aren't complete savages like the Stranded, three of whom raped her, which is esential to the story and her character growth btw. She is also a survival specilist, a sniper, and former Commando trainer, Dom's former sergeant.
Anya is also a vet of the Pendulu Wars, tho she never particpated in frontline duty. She was still intel officer, but in the books she had to undergo basic training like all Gears. In the second, she underwent even more training because of the need for more soldiers and skills being distributed.
So women have been in the Gears universe for a while.
Also, the stripped down armor makes sense. In the books as well, after the second game, humans relocate to a small island with the remaining population, trying to rebuild and repopulate, hoping to see the Locust killed off from the winter, while also coming up with a plan to retake the mainland. So, stripped down armor makes sense in that they're in warmer environments, which should also make for some interesting new places and ways to fight, as they also need to combat Stranded and Pirate Stranded.

Women in gears of war are pretty much seen as reproduction machines. They have breeding camp were they do invitro fertilization on the women and give drugs to induce puberty at a young age. The first two you mentioned are infertile the third is most likely so valuable that they didnt want to send to the feild.

@Garret: In the first book, Dom mentions to Bernie that because Anya is infertile, they let her work in HQ, which is way she's not in a breeding camp. Also, the reproduction farms play a big role in the comics, as the story arc with Alex takes the squad back to one of them, looking for survivors.

This whole breeding camp comic book storyline sounds like utter poo. Totally not what the gears universe is for me. If it ain't in the game then it can gtfo. I don't know why people feel the need to expand on such a basic universe. Basically just for people who didn't get what was going on in Gears 1 and have to be spoon fed to keep up.
The game is a classic without back story, and it allows it to be more personal because you impress your own traits/story upon them.
Anyone else get shivers when the tone of the music changes when the first lambent creature appears? It's like the sorrow of the song takes on a completely new and creepy element. Have to hand it to EPIC, they are Hype masters.

Anywho, I played the first one religiously, the second one almost as much, but ya know, I'm kinda getting sick of the craptastic multiplayer. Not that it in and of itself is bad, its just so damn laggy and glitchy. I'm going to wait until my bro gets ahold of it, play the multiplayer, and if its crap, I'm renting it, or if I feel masochistic, I'll buy it used. I ain't giving Epic another cent of my money after they were like "Yo, guys, we totally fixed the lag from the first one when we went to the second one" and yet you go to 2 and its even worse....

No, the Lambent are the worst part of the whole series IMO, ooooh... glow in the dark >_<
I hate their guts for the gears 2 end boss. I love the games none the less.
