Subject: Starting WHFB : Starting with Skaven.

Poxed Plague Monk

Hey guys, finally worked up a chunk of cash to start my Skaven army as my first WHFB army, I've had the new codex for a while along with a single regiment of clanrats and Queek headtaker, since those models are awesome to paint.
Anyway,
My shopping list right now is the following :
1 Skaven Gray Seer.
Skaven Battalion : (40) Clanrats, (20) Plague Monks, (2) Rat Ogres, (3) Pack Masters and (6) Giant Rats.
2 Jezzail teams
3 Poison Wind Globadiers
---
I already have 20 clanrats and Queek headtaker.
Is there anything else I should buy? or remove rather.
Thanks!

Unless your playing 3000 points+, you can't have the grey seer as well as queek ^.^
Only 3 PWG? Those...wont (or rather can't) do anything.

Really? I thought Grey seers only counted as a hero, bleh, I should read more .
Suggestions then? Rather than just pointing out all of the wrongs in that, you could atleast offer a bit of help.

You did ask what you should remove. He responded with some things you could remove. I think that qualifies as at least *a bit* of help.
I think you need more Jezzails to make an actual unit, so take a look at that. Same for globadiers. If you're going heavy magic, a plague priest and/or warlocks could be handy. The warp lightning default with energy condenser seems like a pretty solid magic support caster to me.
And, much as I hate to say so, your rare slots are super-effective. The doomwheel and warp lightning cannon are cheap points options that won't eat into too much of the rest, and also don't require a drastic conversion like the hell-pit.

Another hundred clan rats .... plus another hundred built as slaves
No seriously: One batallion is a good start.
I am a bit reluctant to glue my Skaven because of the imminent 8th edition with big rule changes. Will spears or hand weapons be the way to go? Difficult to tell. 17th April will at least bring the first official announcment of 8th edition.

Not trying to hijack the thread but where did you see this. Are they announcing what they intended to change and giving specifics? or just a broad we will be retuning X X and X.

Knowing GW, they will just hint at 8th edition with no details. Even this announcment is only rumoured ATM.

Okay, So I went over my list again, just redid it with a bit of clarification like I should have from the start.
1 Warlock Engineer (Hero)
Skaven Battalion : (40) Clanrats, (20) Plague Monks, (2) Rat Ogres, (3) Pack Masters and (6) Giant Rats.
3 Jezzail teams
5 Poison Wind Globadiers
1 Doomwheel.
Edit : curious, when it comes to forming regiments. Are you allowed to mix handweapons? like having 10 clanrats with spears and 10 with swords/daggers and whatever? I'm coming straight from 40k so this is a bit confusing for me.
Thanks

Directly covered in the rulebook, guy.
Short answer is: No, they all have to have the same. They can LOOK like they have different, but the majority must have the weapon they're using or some such.
However, unless it specifically specifies it replaces your hand-weapon, you choose which to fight with.

If this were me, I would buy two batallions, and the doomwheel if you have the extra $$$. Queek can easily be played as a generic warlord in smaller games. You will have enough ogres and giant rats to make solid units, as well as all the rank and file you will ever need, at 50 points for a block of 20 slaves you can always afford them, and it will also give you enough rats to take advantage of squeeks unit upgrades and have enough to push a bell or furnace... From there you can pick up specials and rare at your convenience/desire/necessity. Lastly you will have tons of bits to do conversions like bonebreakers... Bsbs...warlitter...heros... Etc. IMO the key to a great, standout army are the extra bits and nicknacs that you only get through collecting a lot of extras to work with... All suggestions are good though

I would wait with a second batallion. Not everyone plays so many Rat Orges, Giant Rats and Monks.
On the other hand, it seems quite certain that Skaven will be in the next starter set due this summer (watch GW announcment 17th April), so there is a good chance to get masses of usable miniatures relatively cheap.
