1.Paint Gloss Varnish.
2.Spry a matt varnish over the top to take the shin away but not leave it to dull.
What do you think and will this work.

You might do better with satin varnish. Easier to control the finish.

For most purposes, I've found that a couple of light coats of GW's purity seal is fine. For constant-use I would recommend a hard gloss underneath, but with varnishing, it's usually better to spray than hand paint.
