Fellow followers of the hive mind:
I would like to know the community's feelings on the newest tyranid 'dex. It has been out for 3 months now, and seen quite a bit of table time. When talking 'codex creep' people always bring up IG, SW, and now the new BA codices, while our beloved bugs get a pass. I, for one, am glad for that and i wonder if you all feel the same way.
I like playing tyranids because of the flavor of the army, the way it looks on the table top, and the ability to field crap-tons of monstrous creatures should i want to play an elite force or simply swarm the field if i'm feeling horde-y that day. I like it because never have i put my bugs on the table and gotten the same rolled-eyes and reactions that i see IG players get when they plop down their Air-Cav lists.
Who else is with me? Non-tyranid players, do you feel that our newest codex still allows for fun, yet balanced games or quite the opposite? i'd like to hear from everyone!

I really like the 3rd ed codex. It was far more customizable . If I want to pay out the ass to give hormaguants flying I should be able to!!

I've only played since late 4th ed 'nids, but i feel the opposite; having a unit that could be completely different each time it hits the table is confusing for the opponent, as well as making it difficult as hell to list-build in your head between games (as I am wont to do).
Though I admit, being able to model a hormagaunt w/ gargoyle wings from the new plastic kit as a legal FOC option would be awesomesauce.

The games I've played against them were fun. First game I laughed as I charged 10 CSM into a brood of 5 warriors expecting to own them like I usually own things. Didn't happen that way. But that kind of experience is fun for me and not going up against broken TH/SS squads is pretty awesome.

As an Ork player, I find the new Tyranid very good. It's balanced, it adds new units without being too gimmicky, and it's kind on the fluff. It's a refreshing break from the space marine shenanigans.

Have not played them yet, but I am having so much fun with modelling all the new units and having rules now for very old models. The model and conversion bitz support by small companies is great. The new characters are fluffy and our options have doubled.

A trygon w/ Balrog wings, a hierophant tail, and harridan bio-cannons is spot-on for a harpy i think. when i get my army fully painted i'll post some pics in the modelling/painting forum.

I like the cost of my Genestealers, although I wish they could still access "grenade effects" as charging into cover stinks nowdays.
I also have set my Carnifexes on a high shelf, and don't think I will play with them, or with my Lictors for a while.
Overall, I like it, but the Tervigon lists are loathed at my FLGS.

There are a million ways to run your hive.
I love a lot of the new units and I love how many of the old units still have their niches as well as many more niches in this dex.

@ porkuslime
the carnifexes and lictors are the few models we have that can possess frag grenades. Yes, diving through cover sucks for any non-MEQ, but there should have been a 1 or 2 point per model upgrade that gave 'stealers and hormagaunts some kind of frag grenade. As for tervigons, I wouldn't say they are 'loathed' where i play but when i field 3 of them they do cause a headache for my opponent in objective games. In kill point missions...well...it's like a shooting gallery.

As guard as my primary army to me nids=so easy of a win that its not even fun. I don't necessarily mind power creep in 5th ed codices but that train seemed to skip the tyranids

What does your typical 1750 list have in it? Just out of curiosity's sake, because my games against guard w/ the new codex are right around 50/50 at the moment.

My complaints are a lack of range OR AP3 ranged attacks. Yes, we should be assaulting, but I would rather not assault full enemy squads with the ragged remnants of my squads since they have been shooting me for so much longer than I could shoot back.
I wish Synapse still kept units from being Instant Deathed. I am rather tired of battle cannons wiping my Warrior units.

2" between Warriors means like 4 warriors getting hit.
Screen warriors with gaunts. Still insta-gibbed but at least they get a cover save.
I actually like Warriors and would love to try an army with 4x9 Warriors as my Troops (at 2500).

My guard lists vary wildly. I like to play the field with their options so to speak. And I usually play either 1500 or 1850 point games.
I tend to go very heavy on heavy support. a squadron of 3 basilisks, another of 2 basilisks, and a squadron of 2 battle tanks is an old favourite
or more recently 3 basilisks in a squadron, and 2 executioners (not in a squadron)
Then everything else in my army is packing as much melta weapons as I can afford. I usually run out of points before I do slots.
As you can see I throw so many templates down range it makes hordes cry, and that many melta weapons make MCs cry Automatically Appended Next Post: 2" between Warriors means like 4 warriors getting hit.
Well the one upside of squadrons is that you resolve all templates before removing models, so 4 warriors could potentially suffer 12 hits from my bassies
Screen warriors with gaunts. Still insta-gibbed but at least they get a cover save.
one word...indirect

Ugh, squadrons of 3 bassies.
I get a trygon into that squadron and that is 3 bassies down the tubes in one cc phase.
I'm actually more worried about heavy bolters/autocannaons than I am tank blasts.

I'm having a fair bit of fun with the new 'nids, admitedly I lost the fist game I've played with the new 'Dex, but that came more from a bad regen roll for my Tervigon and a good CC for some Blood Claws...oh & a brief lapse in the hive mind when I forgot to infiltrate my stealers...that was dumb

Frankly I love the new dex. IMO those who complain about it are trying to make it too much like the 4th edition one. Don't get me wrong, the 4th was a good dex as well, but suffered from a limited number of viable strats. I'm still figuring out things to take with the new book.
If they're a little behind the curve (and I've not seen anything to really suggest this) then that's fine, because as was said earlier they have a variety of ways to keep your opponent guessing.

I brought a 2500 'Nidzilla list to the local tournament yesterday and came out of it with a solid victory and 2 minor losses (I was within 2 kp for each of my losses). There are tactics I could have done better, and a couple of my list choices were sub-par (Harpy, anyone?), but i had *gasp* FUN! In that respect, I won, even if i didn't walk out with a prize. I'm going to start playtesting a more swarmy-army build (still with tervigons, of course) and see if the codex's strengths lie more in that realm w/ MC's for support, instead of the leading role like i did yesterday.
