This is less of a new rule, but more of a clarification. I looked in the index, and even reread most of the chapters, and still couldn't find anything that really explained grenades. There's a side note about two lines long that talks about defensive grenades, but that seems to be the extent. I know grenades are usually codex based, but a simple paragraph in the rulebook would really help.
Am I missing some crucial page filled with untold secrets, or are they rules just not really covered?

Hello,
Look at page 36,63. These are the rules for basic grenades. Then each codex will have more general rules dealing with each kind. Hope this helps.

Yeah, i always thought that grenades should be able to be used against infantry. So you could throw a krak grenade using your BS and get a single S6 hit instead of charging in.
As far as i am aware the only offensive use for greanades is against vehicles.

Hi all.
What would you folks think of letting ONE grenade per unit to be thrown per shooting- assault action?
Offencive grenades.
Frag Str 3 3" blast AP -
Krak Str 6 AP 4
Plasma Str 4 3" blast AP 6.
(Melta Bombs have to be placed on the target , death or glory still applies.)
Defencive grenades
Smoke str- 3" blast - 5 = cover save,(from attacking units whos LOS passes through the grenade effect)
Blind /Photon 3" blast - 4+ cover save, (from attacking units whos LOS passes through the grenade effect).
Tangle foot , produces 5" blast area of difficult ground , all infantry count as S.A.P when crossing the tangle foot area.
Hallucenogen- 5 " blast area, all models caught in the blast become confused and count as initiative 1.
Oooops I am getting carried away....

@Lanrak: Interesting ideas, but then why would only one model in the unit be able to throw them? That doesn't make much sense from a perspective of anything other than game balance (which is an important perspective). Maybe the idea would be that only one model per unit gets free grenades and if you want to build a grenadier unit it's powerful at short range but expensive. Actually the more I think about this the more fun it sounds.

Our IG player used some Elysians the other day and one of 'em had a thrown detonation pack thing. R: 6" S8 AP2 Large blast I believe it was. Is something like that what you mean Lanrak?

Hi Guys.
The thing is with 2nd ed ALL grenades were thrown by all models in a unit, and often they had tables of effects, and this slowed the game down abit.
Allowing every model in an ork mob to throw a stikk bomb (30 x3" templates !) is a bit silly.
So just allowing the CLOSEST model to the enemy unit throw one grenade, instead of shoot /assault,in a bid to aid the rest of thier unit, means grenades are used in a reasonable way.IMO.
(In real life most troops only carry 2 or 3 grenades each any way, and use them spareingly...)
I put up some of the old grenade type to show the variety of special and varied grenades we could include.... if you wanted.

i feel the same way although i didn't play 2nd edition. grenades are represented well enough by their description of "going off and contributing to the wounds in the assault phase"

In real life, I'm pretty sure only a few people (one or two) would throw their grenade(s) at a single target (squad/unit) at a time, so, in game, the same thing would (probably) happen.
However, someone said that removing throw-able grenades was to speed up the game and I can agree with that, the game takes long enough to play.

Hi Distortionist.
They removed the ability of every model to throw a grenade to speed the game up.
However , allowing ONE model in a unit to make a grenade attack, also speeds the game up , but allows grenades effects to be more accuratley represented .
And if GW realy wanted the game to be speeded up they would NOT have introduce so many random elements, and abstracted exceptions.

i made a DIY unit of SM commandos that could, as a unit, fire incindiary grenades as a single Str4 AP5 large blase template that ignored cover.
i imagine if space marines threw grenades the whole unit would fire a single large blast that was reasonably weak, but could potentially be devestating.

Ahh 2nd edition, the land of vortex grenades. I wish they'd bring those back so I can off those giant expensive characters people tool around with these days.

I think the idea of grenades in 2nd and earlier, were cool, but needs to be worked on, so its more fluid. I mean, the OLD rules had alot of cool ideas in them, but were WAY to complex and demanding to work nicely.
I think some of the ideas being tossed around right now would be alot of fun. I agree, the way we use grenades right now is a bit of a "oh......so we dont use them.....like......thaaaaaat........" Make sure you read that with the utmost emo attitude possible.
