Hey folks

I'm looking at new places to live, 2 of the choices are Thailand and Mexico.

One major factor is the 40k gaming community in the countries.

Hence, my question is, does anyone know about said communities in either of these 2 places? Probably looking at Bangkok, Chiapas and Oaxaca.

Thanks!!

Runnin up on ya.

There used to be a game store in Siam Discover Center, in Bangkok...

I was curious, because I haven't been to Bangkok in a while and I ran across this place http://battlefieldbangkok.com/bfb/index.php?page=where-are-we

right on skumpit road in downtown farang ville.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

Sounds good for Bangkok then, I figured that would be the case.

While Thailand is cheap to live I guess GW is still expensive hence it will be an expat community.

Any idea how many players are in the community? I guess ideally it would be great to find dakka members in either of these places.

Sorry, can't help you there. You might drop that one store an e-mail and ask them what their 40k crowd is like. I never spent much time in Bangkok because, well, Bangkok sucks so I always hit the islands for some scuba fun.

Thanks man, good idea on the email.

Sure, BK is just another big city, but living there gives easy access to the islands

Keen to hear on Mexico if anyone has any knowledge.

What part of Mexico? if you go to any of the big cities (Mexico city (D.F), Guadalajara, Monterrey, Tijuana, Puebla), you will find anything you would in the U.S., plenty of geeks in here, the only downside will probably be that prices tend to be a bit higher (but food is way cheaper so it balances itself).

It depends mainly on where the gf gets a job. It currently looks like Oaxaca, think it has a population of 800k.

Any ideas if that has gaming?

I saw your PM, and while I have only been to both places a few days at a time, I'm going to be honest, both Oaxaca and Chiapas are some of the poorest/less developed states in the country, and I really doubt you will find a wargaming club in those areas.

On the positive side, if you don't mind driving about an hour or so (depends on your exact location), both Puebla and Veracruz are close by and getting there isn't much of a problem due to the huge, high speed highways that connect the main cities, and both states will probably have several wargaming/hobby places.

@Dakkadood - I would travel an hour to play. However I would prefer not to. Based on that I will try to convince the GF to look in larger cities. Mexico City might be the way to go. They are offering about 11k Pacos/month + a house for a ESL teaching supervisor position. Seems a bit low? Not sure. If you don't mind, it would be great to get feedback on any other locations she looks at. It's good to hear neutral info on the cities, the Director interviewing was biased.

@Luke - its not definite dude, but I must say its good to get sun, stars and fresh air. She is also looking at course design places in SH and has interviews for it. If we did go Mexico in early June I prob wouldn't go back to SH first, but would def be there in Oct for the wedding.

Well either way good luck with it. We found a new player a few days ago. He has his ultramarines up on here and they look beautiful. Will PM you his thread.
