Subject: IG when to blob? and when to not? (and a few other questions)
|

Allright, I've started working on my not so secret guard "man spam" project. (soon to be posting pics in the modeling forums)
So I have a few questions.
1: When you combine squads, can you add heavy weapons teams? It doesn't look like you can.
2: When you combine squads and have a commisar in the Platoon commad squad, does the blob get to use the commisars leadership for orders, assigned to it?
3: Can a Company command squad isue orders to platoon command squads?
4: Can orders be issued to heavy weapons squads?
5: Would it be best to not combine squads when facing close combat oriented armies, such as Nids, Demons, Blood angels, etc.etc. With the idea of feeding sacrificial units and then shooting what survives after?
6: Would it be best to blob up against shooty armies? With the idea of denying killpoints due to large mass.
7: Do heavy weapons squads count as scoring units by themselves?
Thanks for the help

1.You could have all the upgrades for every squad and then put all your 10 man squads into a 50 man suqad
2.Yes
3.Yes
4.Yes
5.Depends,kill points, you always keep them together, and leave one squad to die alone
6.Yes,you put everything together
7.Yes

I don't think it's actually that clear cut. While it does drastically cut down on the number of kill points you can give away, it also drastically increases the amount of firepower lost per kill point lost.
I mean, if you had a single 50-man squad, and it lost combat and ran away, you lose a kill point, and who is going to be left to shoot what charged that squad? If you keep them separate, you lose a single 10-man squad, but then you have the chance for those other 40 guys to be able to actually kill the crazy assaulter before it wipes all the other men off the board.
Yes, you have to be conservative when it comes to guard when it comes to kill points, but you can't forget that the best way to deny your opponent kill points is to make his units dead. You can't afford to sacrifice firepower just to consolidate kill points.

Put a commissar in the blob squad and you dont have to worry about it running away. In fact it will probably be able to beat most things in combat due to sheer number of attacks and wounds. Add in the fact that heavy weapon teams in the infantry squads are very difficult for your opponent to remove. A blob squad in cover is extremely difficult to remove through shooting. Close combat is not a great option either unless youre running large ork mobs or full size squads of unit good in combat. I've had my blob squad take out plenty of monstrous creatures foolish enough to try to take them on alone. The only issue is that you must be careful of dreadnoughts or other AV 11 or higher walkers. Another ability the blob squad has is that that they need only one order. Using FRFSRF with a 40 to 50 man platoon and you are gonna murder whatever you are shooting at.

Murder whatever you are shooting at?No!
I've seen my friend's 50 man FRFSRF,and all it did was took out 2 wounds on the trygon, and the next turn he charged in,killing and making the guardsman run away like cowards, and chased them down

Thats statistically improbably. Generally you would expect to do about 4 wounds to a trygon from 150 BS3 shots. Of course Each squad can also have a heavy weapon and a special weapon, so that puts that up by quite a lot. The moral of the story is dont shoot lasguns at stuff with T5+ and put comissars (probably with powerfists) into your blobs.

I mean, what's the point in winning if you allow people that don't take the game seriously to live? |

plus, that much firepower would toast a whole tac squad a turn. Of course, getting all 50 in 12" is another matter.

When you blob you don't have to commit all 50 guys to it. For instance if you have a 50 man platoon you can blob 30 of them into one unit, then keep two 10 man squads as their own. Flexibility with platoons is huge. It is something the OP will have to practice with.
the moral of the story is dont shoot lasguns at stuff with T5+ and put comissars (probably with powerfists) into your blobs.
Commissars with PFs can't be taken in regular squads.

What the...
Why would you ever want to FRFSRF a MC in front of you if you can use Bring it Down instead? Lasguns are crappy against such targets and you forgoe the chance to take the threat out with the big guns you buyed for the blob. I mean 3 synch. Lascannons, 3 synch. GL's and 21 synch. Lasgun/pistol shots (+ the commissars bolt pistol) in a 30 men blob will even make a Trygon cry . 2 synch. lasgun shots are at least as deadly as 3 normal ones and you're also boosting your HW squads and the special weapons.
If you ask me FRFSRF is only an option if BiD doesn't work...

Sometimes you might only have a PCS in range, or used your CCS orders on other things. Mass lasguns will work on MC's. No you might not take out an MC in one go, but if you put 3-4 wounds on it, it makes way easier for the rest of your army to finish it off. A lot of monsterous creatures don't have 6 wounds either.

That's why you use Bring It Down instead and why every squad has a heavy weapon and special weapon. In my case they are usually lascannon/missile launchers and plasma guns. My 30 man squad has taken down more than one Tyranid MC at rapid fire range in a single round of shooting. And just in case, all the sgts and the commissar have powerweapons.
And to the OP, I always blob, regardless of scenario, etc. That single 30-man squad can control multiple objectives, don't ya know........

I never blob against any army that looks like it has a hint of close combat ability. Against shooting opponents I blob 2 squads usually, so I can still fire at more targets but I have more ablative wounds for my heavy weapon teams

-Sly Marbo once played an objective mission just to see what it was like to not meet every victory condition on his own.
-Sly Marbo bought a third edition rulebook just to play meat grinder as the attacker.
-Marbo doesn't need an Eldar farseer as an ally; his enemies are already doomed
-Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain
-Sly Marbo still attacks the front armor value in assault, for pity's sake. |
