Ok. I have a problem. It is painting. When I get to the point that I need to start painting my army, my mind wonders to another army to collect. I have a dwarf army assembled, primed, and maybe about 1500 points actually painted (not all by me and probably not the units I would actually field). I have a WE army assembled and primed with two units of dryads painted (once again not by me). I have a DE army almost assembled, just need to finish the harpy conversions and it will be done. I also have a small brettonian force assembled and primed but have lost interest in it. Anyway, here is the real problem, I have already been debating between starting an empire or lizardmen army and today went to the GW store to get black primer for my DE army and it happened. Yup, you guessed it..... I am going to start an all goblin army I came to my senses just before picking up the BfSP set and the O&G army book and ran out of the store without even buying my primer.

I need to go back sometime, so I need some advice either talking me out of a fun filled all goblin list or what I should focus on getting for the list. I like the idea of fanatics, either of the calvary, squig hoppers, and doom divers. Oh yeah and lots of goblins. What do you guys think?

Im kind of in the same boat. I have my dark elf army completely done. (build wise) and am slowly working on painting it.

Ive got the main stuff painted (generals, lords, etc) but just cant get in the groove for the RnF soldiers.

So now im starting on a beastman army!!!

I've had the same problem for a long long time as well. I started collecting O+G, I bought some gobbos, painted 6 of them and then bought WoC book..didnt buy any models for them, but recently bought the DE book and a box of corsairs. main reason why I change around to other armies is because my impression of what sort of army I want to play changes at times. Sometimes I feel like i wanna do a shooty army, other times melee, horde, easy tactics, etc. thats why I decided to go with DE in the end. They have units that can do everything very well, just need to be careful with them. I love WoC but the tactics are too boring. Get into melee ASAP and slaughter all.

Being this is my 3rd go around with GW product, I thought I had this problem licked by joining an escalation league for WHFB. We started with 500 pts and built from there. Of course I kept buying and switching units, until I had my 500 pts painted and about 1500pts sitting . . .

I understand.

I did this... and the only way I stopped it, was by selling everything to buy a fully painted army. My goal has been to be content with playing with this, and if I do buy something else, to do so a unit at a time and paint it.

The "being content" part has worked so far (which could also be due to a lack of funds to buy another army...) but we'll see if I start another army whether I do so slowly but surely, and paint it, or fall into the same cycle I was in before!

Sorry I don't have a solution for you... except, go goblins

Haha such an easy trap to fall into!

I'v found that using characters, unit champions/standard bearers or monsters as rewards for painting RnF work well. I usually limit myself to one of these models per 5-10 Rnf.

But I can relate, my weakness is getting sucked into thinking about my next purchase, before I'v completed all the unpainted models.

I built my DE army list in 500 point increments, thinking that if I had smaller goals that I would be more motivated to do it. Hmmm...looks like goblins might be up next. I guess the brightside is that in a couple more years I should have all the armies.

I wouldn't boogeyman, I really do suggest you contemplate selling one of your armies (brets I suppose, since you say you don't like them) and maybe another you don't like that much for a lot of cash. Then finish TWO armies. That way you can decide which to play whenever you want to play.

I've even been contemplating not buying the whole gakload of my 2250 beastmen list and build TWO ARMIES AT ONCE(I can't believe I just said that...almost caused me a heart attack) so I won't get bored at all!

Wow...that sounds like a terribly good idea...instead of 2250 points of beastmen...two armies of 1000 points.

I hear ya there. Whatever army book I'm reading at the moment (I buy them all when they come out), gets me thinking about an army. So hard to finish even one army.

I actually got a good sized Lizard army, thanks to them being one of the easiest to paint. It's not hard to give them three shades of blue and still look decent. It helps that they don't wear clothes.

Ogres aren't too bad, either due to the model count being relatively low. I'm tempted to give the Brets a shot for this reason.

I'm going to second Karon's idea on a few small pointed lists. I started out fantasy with WoC, but as was mentioned, thier playstyle is very 1.5 dimensional... So I started a small khorn beastman army as an auxillary, and began building a 1500 list. Just being able to vary the paintstyle and colors is very rewarding, and keeps you motivated to paint. Also, at the end of the day, your 'cool scenario options go through the roof... Need a neutral army? How about some slaves? Or wandering heros... The list goes on. I have some Minotaur and a last beast hers before I move on to slaanesh dark elves, and I've already picked out and converted the sorceress... So I feel your pain...

Sounds like you just need to focus on one goal for a while. Tournaments are generally good motivation - requires you to lock in a list and have it painted.

Quick question about the rumours of the new edition and o&g army book. I mentioned it to a GW employee and of course they said nadda, that maybe a big maybe if a new edition did come out it might be at the end of the summer. I also have heard conflicting rumours about a new o&g army book. Can anyone shine some light on this?

It's all rumors at this point. I have heard later this summer, i have also heard that 7th hasnt been out very long and they wont be releaseing a new one for a while.

Theres a decent synopsis of everything that is "rumored to change" in the rumors forum

It is a slippery slope. I bought the O&G army book today.

And I still forgot to get the primer.

Ok, so now I need some help.

1) With the new edition coming out in July, should I still buy the battle for skull pass for the goblins? Part of the reason for buying it was for the rule book too. I also have a dwarf army so I figured I could use all the mini's. (I don't need the dwarfs at all)
2) Here is what I was thinking about getting for a goblin army. 20 spearmen, 20 spearmen, 20 archers, (BfSP), plus fanatics (at least 6), 10x squig hoppers, spear chuckas, giant, and doom diver. How much fun will this be?
3) Can you guys suggest some decent character builds?
4) Can anyone confirm or shed some more light on 8th ed. box containing HE and scaven or that O&G will not be getting a new army book?

I've heard that o and g arnt getting a new book, just new models... No idea on credibility of that, but models are certainly in pre release mode

TBH I dont think GW is gonna redo the O&G book anytime soon. There are other armies that need updating much more, whether they be WHFB or 40K. I think the new model release was GW's attempt to keep O&G collectors or fans happy for a bit while they get some other things done. It's why I decided in the end to not bother collecting O&G. As much as I love them, they do need a rehaul, and I don't wanna collect a huge army of them only to see a new release of models and/or rules in another year or so, and have me not like the changes. On the flipside of that, it would suck to play and O&G army and have to wait 2 years or so for another update and be stuck with the short end of the stick.

Although, despite how I feel....everyone knows green is mean...

The above site helped me out a lot, as I am an aspiring new Orc and Gobbo player myself. I would check it out - there's a lot to read - and then that might help you with a lot of your questions. It helped me out!

Well, we now know that the new edition of WHFB is right around the corner in July (the 10th if I recall), so that'll help you figure some things out in regards to your all gobbo army.

If you can afford it, I would get the BfSP set, since it'll be going away pretty soon, if for no other reason. The troops and spider riders in there will be worth it to really bulk out your forces, especially if 3000 points is supposedly the rumor for a new standard game size. You can always sell the Dwarves later, since people will play Dwarves and once the BfSP set goes away they will be more rare and desired than now.

That's what I'm trying to do. I've promised myself that I won't buy any more Wood Elves until I've painted all the ones I've got already. The Dark Elves will probably come after them, I think. 2000pts+ all made up, but only around 500 painted =P

Interestingly, having read the earlier posts in this thread, I find myself the opposite of many of you. I actually enjoy painting rank-and-file, and try to put off doing the character models & elite units. I think that it helps that the rnf units are so small with both my armies being elves, but I also have this fear of my basic troops looking better than my characters. I think the logic behind leaving them is that if I do them last, I'll have had so much experience painting that particular army that the characters will really stand out as something special. I think that's how my brain works, anyway =P

While I'm not too knowledgeable about the current Orcs & Goblins, Doom Divers, Fanatics and Squigs are always fun. A few editions ago, I used to run a pure Night Goblin army, and often the fanatics would win a game for me, decimating my opponent's heavy cavalry before they could charge. Of course, inevitably they'd then plough straight through my own units, but that's half the fun =)

Try starting a Painting and Modelling blog on the relevant Dakka forum page. The encouragement from other Dakka members eager to see more of your army, may keep you focused.

I do wonder whether goblins are a good idea for a serial army changer (I too am guilty of this and have been for decades). Good luck though

Dude, I have a question - do you just hate painting?

Because it sounds like you come up with excuses not to paint, then start a new army.

At the end of the day, if it entertains you, why worry about it?

But if you're spending way too much $$$, then you know, it is time for a new plan.

I agree with others - if you are actually getting bored with the old armies, sell them off. If you still love all the old armies, put them away for a while and you will be reinspired to work on them again at a later time.

Another possibility - you will enjoy playing small games the best. This might work nicely for you since all your armies are small.

I have a friend who owns almost every WHF army. He buys a new one every year and has been playing for 20+ years. It is a big $$$ investment, but as long as you are using them (for painting, playing, etc) it is worth it. Take the $$$ you are spending and divide this by the number of hours of FUN you are getting out of it - then decide if it is a good deal. If I spend $200 on models but then get 50 hours of fun out of them over the course of the summer, that's $4 an hour - compare that to the price of seeing a movie at the theatre and you see it isn't a bad deal.

If you're spending $1000 on models within a few weeks, well, it will take many more hours to "make good" on the investment. I'd suggest finding fan fiction on the net or reading 40K novels for your chosen armies to really stay inspired. And do get them painted if you like painting at all. Make painting fun! Play your fave music that you never listen to anymore, then paint away! Invite friends to paint with you and enjoy the company! Make it an event! With your models already purchased, this is at this point FREE FUN that helps you make good on your investment.

Anyway, I just spit out a lot of ideas here - see what works for you, hope I have been helpful.

Thanks for the advice. It isn't that I hate painting, it's just that I get discouraged with it. It is hard to schedule any kind of free time when you have a 4 and 2 year old running around. I have tried to leave a painting station up, but sooner or later one of the boys gets overly interested in it and wants to play with the models.

Now I get overwhelmed when I even think about painting. I didn't think my armies were small. What I have painted, yes, but what I have assembled, I thought I was doing pretty good. My main three armies I have 3k WE (no upgrades), 4k Dwarfs (no upgrades), and I would say at least 4k DE (no upgrades).

I like the creating process the most, which leads me to starting new armies. Every time I actually get some games in though, I do get in the mood to start painting again. I just need to find the time and players to get a game in.
