A quick question. In my small gaming group, a couple of players are questioning whether the Sanguinary Priest can use the FC and FNP bonus on himself and his own unit (as well as the usual bonus to any other unit within 6").

I think the Sanguinary Priest should be able to, but im thinking that these two players are trying to nerf my army or make it less effective.

Could anyone be inclined to comment on this situation?

I don't see why it wouldn't I mean he gives it to all units within 6" so everyone in the squad including him should get it. I mean technically you can say everyone else gets it and just dont give him any wounds so you get all the FNP saves anyways.

I think they are just trying to nerf your army instead of finding ways to beat it.

Blood Chalice: "All friendly units within 6" are subject to the furious charge and feel no pain special rules"
I'd say that because he is within 6" of both himselft and his unit, both he and his unit benefit from the FC and FNP special rules.

Seems prertty clear to me. Also look at the Sang character. It says all units, except himself, gains .... so there is precedent for them to say when it does not effect themselves.

On Dakka he was Eldanar. In our area, he was Lee. R.I.P., Lee Guthrie.

Of course they can insist that it wouldn't work on SP itself.
However, the rules say that it works on units within 6". Then it obviously works on unit that it has joined, because they 6" is counted from the SP. And the buff is for the unit, and the SP is part of the unit --> SP gains the buff.
Anybody trying to insist that the buff doesn't work on himself should just get punched hard. Or at least I would.

does the SP count as a "unit" per the definition in the rulebook? yes, all IC's do, regardless of whether they are currently joined to a squad. is he within 6" of himself? yes. He gets FNP and FC even when alone.

Another way to look at is is that the blood chalice is listed under the wargear section on the Sanguinary Priest. This infers that it is the Blood Chalice not the priest who gives Furious Charge and FNP to all friendly units within 6". Since the wielder of the Blood Chalice is always within the 6" range and is not en enemy unit, the wielder (aka Sanguinary Priest) always benefits from its effects.

If it were to say all friendly units within 6" of the Sanguinary Priest an argument could be made, however, that is not the case.

It's the same as with Dante in the 4th edition codex.

A Model is always within any distance of itself. To say otherwise is a bit silly!

OMG guys, all you have to do really is look at Corbulo, he has the same exact thing.

Corbulo's Red Grail: "All friendly units within 6" of Corbulo are subject to the Furious Charge and Feel No Pain special rules. Any Feel No Pain roll taken for Corbulo himself is passed on a 2+, rather than a 4+."

The Blood Chalice for the SPs have the same exact wording except the 2+ and since it implies that Corbulo gets a FNP roll because of his Red Grail, then we can assume SPs get their FNP rolls as well.

Blood Chalice: "All friendly units within 6" are subject to the Furious Charge and Feel No Pain special rules."

They shall be my finest warriors, these men who give of themselves to me. Like clay I shall mould them, and in the furnace of war forge them. They will be of iron will and steely muscle. In great armour shall I clad them and with the mightiest guns will they be armed. They will be untouched by plague or disease, no sickness will blight them. They will have tactics, strategies and machines so that no foe can best them in battle. They are my bulwark against the Terror. They are the Defenders of Humanity. They are my Space Marines and they shall know no fear.
