So in the Black Templars codex for example, it says that a rhino (which is already armed with a storm bolter) can take a pintle-mounted storm bolter as a vehicle upgrade. What does this mean? That it can have two storm bolters, or what? I am confused.
If so, then where would they be placed? I was under the impression that pintle-mounted meant that the weapon was mounted on top of the top hatch, but then where would the original one go, the one that the rhino already has?

Yes it means it can have two. My friend one in each of the hatches at the front of the rhino

-Any terrain containing Sly Marbo is dangerous terrain.
-Sly Marbo once played an objective mission just to see what it was like to not meet every victory condition on his own.
-Sly Marbo bought a third edition rulebook just to play meat grinder as the attacker.
-Marbo doesn't need an Eldar farseer as an ally; his enemies are already doomed
-Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain
-Sly Marbo still attacks the front armor value in assault, for pity's sake. |

So then does that mean that both of them are essentially pintle-mounted, with 360 degree arc of fire?

Essentially yes, as I believe it says in the rulebook that all pintle weapons are 360 fire arc

To clarify a little:
There are actually two different ways to mount a storm bolter on the rhino kit.
The first is the pintle mount.
The second is the small hull-mount that is also used for the Hunter Killer missile launcher.
If the codex doesn't specify a pintle mount, then it's probably better to use the hull mount. If you want to then add the pintle mounted storm bolter as an upgrade, it just goes on beside the hull mounted one.
It gets a little cramped if you try to put two pintle-mounts on the front of a rhino, as it's not really designed for two cupolas side by side.

Give the Marine in the top hatch one of your unused right-armed storm bolter bits, and convert the pintle mount to be left-handed only.

I tried this with my Chaos rhinos and the hatches are just too clsoe to get 2 "proper" pintle mounts side by side.
the optiosn are to either use the HK mount (as states above) or make some sort of conversion.I used the searchlight mount (with out the light) and then glued the mounting peg from the cupole to the lfat section to make, what i call and auto-targetting bolter. Looks like a spindly turret.
Also note that if you are playgin apoc, pintle mounted weapsn only need their normal BS to hit fliers.
