Mmm...this might be fun to do.

I really like a sport where shooting a double barrel skat is a requirement. I may think about doing this.

Ive always been a fan of the speed shooting competitions too. Watching the world record holders is just insane.

CAS is fun. Ive done it a few times. Locals even have a range about 2 miles from my house.

Tell me more. Do you know how much practice is required to be competive?

My dad (and ma!) used to be really into this and I've tried it myself a few times. I can see it being very fun but it wasn't really for me. Depending on the venue, it can be extremely competitive. At the local club level, it's often just about the fun of dressing up and (safely) having a lark with your pals over a common interest--like 40k but with live ammunition rather than toy soldiers. I don't think you should join SASS if your main goal is to "be the best" because the best are already pretty damn great--i.e., they are professional, corporate-sponsored shooters. The buy-in can be steep. Firearms aside, the clothing is not cheap. No one minds if you wear Wranglers around, however, but the make believe is a big part of the fun. If you're not into pretending to be in the Old West, it may not be the hobby for you.

Dad has sinced moved on (or maybe back to is a better way of putting) IDPA and IPSC after founding and running a local SASS-affiliated CAS group. He got pretty bummed out regarding the political and competitive motivations overshadowing the "we're dressed like cowboys for heaven's sake, let's not take ourselves too seriously" comradery at his range. I've often asked him if he plans on getting back into it but he seems more interested in pursuing other ballistical hobbies these days.

That really all depends on how quick a learner you are, and how good everyone else is around you. Here they meet on the first Sat of every month, and shoot all morning. Since most the members here are older gents, the "Comp" side of things is more relaxed. It's more about haveing fun with friends then clearing the stage in 30 seconds.

If you get the chance, I highly suggest you go and watch some of these guys. Even sitting on the sidelines is a blast.

Ayah looking at verious shooting sports currently. Trying to figure out one I can practice sufficiently with my somewhat strange schedule.

Competitive Western shooting with politics, thats interesting, and unexpected. My only standard is an old comrade who sends about 1,000 rounds downrange a month and I don't know if thats a lot, a little, or standard.

That's quite a lot, I'd say. He must be into bench loading or be pretty well off.

He's competitive and is into handloading. Hence my Qs. I can put 1,200 downrange in a month myself, but thats mostly .22LR and eminently cheaper.

I'm just starting to look at this seriously. Can I pick your and JP400's brains offline?

Lots of these guys probably pour their own bullets, too. That can save a bundle.

The cartridges I load are pretty much from that period. If you reload already, the real startup costs are the cases, and then, probably the bullet moulds. Black powder cartridge cases will probably last forever.

It's not hard to have a few hundred loaded up over the course of an evening.

Something I've been considering is skirmishing.

I've already got muskets, bullets, etc., but getting outfitted with the uniform and such would be the real cost here.
