After trying out Eldar and getting my ass handed to me (aside from the tourney where i placed 6th), I don't think they are for me.

So back to the drawing board and a challenge from a guy at my flgs.

"Go and try Necrons" he said.

"They need a new codex" I said.

Then everyone else in the store challenged me to make Necrons and make them competitive.

OK.

I played them in 2nd, 3rd and 4th, I know what was good then, but what about now in 5th???

From my understanding:

Lots of Destroyers.
Tomb Spider Support with Scarab Charge blockers.
Monoliths - as in more than one.

Probably Nurgle, Africa has the lock on that.

Destroyers are good, as are warriors in large numbers of squads.

Just try not to get charged by anything that can hit for toffee, as you have a good chance of running and I2 sucks...

Edit: also, how did you play them in 2nd? They were a 3rd ed army....

Their rules were released in WD in 1997.

The only models that they had then were Warriors, Scarabs, Destroyers and the Lord.

The army then was scary.

All toughness 5, Scarabs were toughness 8.

All Necrons ignored special close combat weapons (power swords and axes, fists) and meant that an opponent had to strike with base strength.

Ah right, forgot they were "WD only" at that point!

Theyve been toned down somewhat since then....

3 monoliths, 40+ Warriors, 2 lords with Rez orbs, and throw the rest of your points at destroyers. Thats about 2k points worth and as close as you can get to "Competitive"

Competitive equals the Deceiver backed up by at least one Monolith, Heavy Destroyers, and Destroyers(or Immortals) with a decent scarab tarpit. Fill in remaing points as desired or required(2x Warrior squads).

How will this do at 1500???:

Lord
Res Orb, Destro Body, Phylactery.

10 Warriors
10 Warriors
10 Warriors

3 Destroyers
3 Destroyers

Monolith
Monolith

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Try as I might, I can't seem to fit in a unit of heavy destroyers with 2 Monolith at 1500 points without dropping a unit of warriors, which seems counterproductive to the PO rule:

Lord
Res Orb.

10 Warriors
10 Warriors

3 Destroyers
3 Destroyers
8 Scarab Swarms

Monolith
Monolith
2 Heavy Destroyers

Actually there is a legitimate strategy to keeping your PO number small. Smaller can be easier to manage. However both strategies are valid. Personally I find the smaller number to be more competitive.

Please enlighten me as I really don't think going into battle with only 20 warriors is a good thing.

List A Phases out at 11. List B Phases out at 5. That means that you can guard 1 10 man squad of warriors using list B easier than you can guard 2 squads in list A. I can hold one of my List B warrior squads in reserve assuring me that I cannot be Phased Out on turn 1 and in all likely hood I have a good chance of maintaing Phase Out immunity until turn 3 or 4. Army list A could have a full squad of warriors holding in reserve and it can still be phased out. Also, the 'non' Necron units generally are the more elite. C'Tan Monoliths and Scarabs are invaluable in 5th and your opponent can only ignore them at their own peril if they attempt to go for the easy win and try to phase out.

Now keep in mind neither list is meant to be competitive, they are extreme examples. But they give a good look at which way you can go with a build and still have a strategy against Phase Out.

Iv only played upto a 1000pts and my list is 30 warriors, 6 destroyers and a lord. Its done fairly well, you just have to keep running away if anyone comes close to you haha.

You don't run away silly creature. You park yourself in your deployment zone(in cover), and don't bother leavening it. Even if you do run away, don't call it that. It's strategic repositioning. Work on it.
