Hi I'm from the uk, I'm a complete wargaming noob, my only expereince is playing a friends hero quest at quite a young age. I am now thinking of starting up 40k and plan on buying the AoBR box set to start me off. But I thought the first thing I should do is join a forum and I hear this one is pretty good : ) Any way I'm rambling now.

Hi all, thanks for the welcome's. I got aobr and I'm pretty impresed. I wasn't sure which army I was going to choose to main, but after seeing how many boys I would eventualy have to paint if I chose Orks, I'm going to go with Space Marines. Now all I've got to do is decide which chapter.
Milky Way, Tingel Arm, Sol System, Earth, That dark shadow right behind you
Welcome to dakka!

Not for long. The polar bears are riding the melting glaciers south in search of penguin-steaks.
Welcome to Dakka brucie have a read up on the strategies of the various races and chapters before you decide - there's loads of stuff on you tube which might be helpfull - fer instance:
Maybe go down your local store and watch some games (they should let you play a sample game or two if you ask).
Buying a new army is definitely not something to rush into (unless you've got lots of money to throw away!) - remember there are other races appart from humans and orcs -
Tyranids have a new codex out - lots of monsters from hordes of raptor like aliens to huge tank like behemoths.
Necrons are due one out next year (maybe) - they look cool (I think so anyway) and are still well playable. If you want a hard to kill Terminator style army then they're your guys.
Eldar are always a solid choice (if you like playing more strategic games) - space elves basically (and my favourite!) - requires a lot of thought though because they can be fragile (except for the Seer Council which is one of the hardest units in the game).
I still like Tau who are also very tactical (but really could do with a new codex) - lots of manouverablity and firepower but useless in close combat.
Dark Eldar I've never played and are totally in need of a new codex (I think there's is still 3rd edition rules) - from what I gather a fast army similar to eldar.
Good luck with your army, have fun with it and welcome to Dakka Dakka!

I loved Hero Quest, I'm waiting for AoBR to come in the post, looks like great value for money. I'd recommend a SM army for starters, try buying a big box of random bitz of ebay so you can start customizing your army straight away!
I've decided to go for Blood Angels, because I've already got a 500 point SM army with aobr and after Reading about them in WD I love their background and CC is how I want to play. I've just been to GW to buy all the paints and files etc i need to get painting plus a BA codex. Time to crack on!
Blood angels?!
CHAOS! CHAOS! CHAOS!
Collect the Knights of Blood. Chaos Marines who use the blood angels rules. Or you could do The Lamenters. They're Blood angels too, but they joined Huron Blackheart ...only to return to the emperor. And as have been sent on a pentinent crusade to make up for the blasphemes.
DEATH TO THE FALSE EMPEROR!
And welcome to dakka.

"And what are the achievements of your fragile Imperium? It is a corpse rotting slowly from within while maggots writhe in its belly. It was built with the toil of heroes and giants, and now it is inhabited by frightened weaklings to whom the glories of those times are half-forgotten legends."
Although it might be a bit late I agree with Madog. Just because you got those SM's and Orks you dont have to choose them. I did and I wish I had thought about the other armies before I went straight into the orks that said orks are pretty awesome, welcome to Dakka!
Also small point but I believe the SM's are 585 points not 500 in the AoBR
