Subject: Dark Angels Ravenwing/Deathwing = Unique Marine army?

Screaming Banshee

Hey guys,
Maybe my title is misleading but I was wondering is this...
Often people are deterred from collecting Chaos, or Space Wolves, or Blood Angels or, y'know, other members of the Marine family because their models are so similar and it feels like a general waste of money...
Would a pure Ravenwing/Deathwing force be the exception to that? They seem to me to have a pretty unique playstyle and they use fairly individual models.
So what I ask is this:
Would such an "expensive" (points-wise) army be worth your buck enough to be worth having as a gimmicky second Marine army?
Are the rules out of date?
Is the Codex any good?
Are Dark Angels even common?

Deathwing are fairly common. But I never have seen a "pure" Ravenwing army. I say go for Raven Wing. The codex is kinda sloppy I used to own it but as far as the Ravenwing goes it's Good. I mean whats not to like about a HQ that basically is on a eldar bike with Plasma Cannon?
He also unlocks Ravenwing bikers as troops.

Rotting Sorcerer of Nurgle

I remember it being called Doublewing.
Ravenwing is a scalpel, the low model count and low maximum squad sizes can be killer...and generally mean mistakes hurt more for RW than other armies.
The only unique things as I see it are:
-Sammael on his pimp mobile, though it's sort or meh games wise.
-Scoring Land Speeders the the lols.
-Scouty Scout scouts with Deathwind pin point deepstrikes.
Otherwise, yea, it's dated and allows for few mistakes gamewise.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Ultramarine Master with Gauntlets of Macragge

A friend of mine runs Deathwing with some Ravenwing in it, and he does pretty well with it. Unless you're going for Doublewing or Deathwing specifically though, you can just take a Marine captain on a bike and some biker squads as troops.

HAHA! Let me jump in as a pure ravenwing player. I love em. They are the Dark Eldar of the Space Marines. Extremely fast, extremely hard hitting but fragile. If you don't cripple them in the first couple turns it is usually game over for you. But the Dark Angels as a whole are woefully underpowered, and the doublewing can be done using C:SM, and the result is alot stronger

-Any terrain containing Sly Marbo is dangerous terrain.
-Sly Marbo once played an objective mission just to see what it was like to not meet every victory condition on his own.
-Sly Marbo bought a third edition rulebook just to play meat grinder as the attacker.
-Marbo doesn't need an Eldar farseer as an ally; his enemies are already doomed
-Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain
-Sly Marbo still attacks the front armor value in assault, for pity's sake. |

I play dark angels (on a rotation basis with the rest of my armys). First thing to say is that if you are going to play anything dark angels, either standard or varients, that you should use the unique aspects of it. Use interrogator chaplains and terminators as troops and ravenwing as troops. I usually field 6 bikers with an attack bike and 3 bikers with an attack bike and a squad of terminators with an assault squad with an interrogator chaplain. I love playing it. Down side for some would be that you win fast or die fast. Games are almost always decided on or before turn 3. Doesn't mean it isn't fun or that you lose. Just means that it's a fragile army and you win or lose fast. As far as how common it is. I know of 12 or so other players that I've talked to recently or play at the store I go to and I'm the only one with Dark Angels. Several vanilla chapters and 1 blood angels (since before the new codex if that matters). So they do exist and they are fun to play and aren't very common. I'd go for it. Well, I have gone for it. I enjoy it. Take a lot of meltas on bikes and multi meltas for anti tank.

I should point out that only when I am playing pure ravenwing do I pick up the DA codex. Every time else it is C:SM, and every other DA player I know only uses C:SM. We are the red-headed stepchild of 40k, but hopefully we will kick ass and chew bubble gum in our next revision.
