I was playing a game with some friends the other night when two of the players had a disagreement about the term "friendly unit". One player was using the Swarmlord which has an ability that allows it give a friendly unit within 18" inches preferred enemy. The argument arose over whether or not the Swarmlord could use the ability on itself or if it had to be used on another unit?

This may seem like a simple question but it ended with neither player agreeing with the other and packing up their models and leaving mid-game. So, if the wise and impartial Dakkaites of YMDC could answer this, it may yet save a damaged friendship.

Yes it can, as evidenced in the BA codex where Corbulo gets FNP on a different value, which is only possible if he counts as Friendly to himself.

Well, the Swarmlord has recently gone to Dr. N. Queen and gotten some prozac, so he doesn't hate himself anymore!

In all seriousness, yes, Friendly includes itself.

To expand, the codex will say when this ability does not extend to the model itself (See C:BA Sanguist)

On Dakka he was Eldanar. In our area, he was Lee. R.I.P., Lee Guthrie.

While the question has been answered, I feel it's worth addressing this point as well:

What would do far more to 'save' the friendship is for both players to unclench a little, accept that it's just a game of toy soldiers, and learn to roll off on it when they can't agree on a given rule interpretation.

Packing up and leaving may (possibly) be an appropriate response in a game against someone you don't know who is being particularly unpleasant about the rules. But against a friend? Is being right about a game of toy soldiers really that important?

Real Players of Toy Soldiers have no Friends!
