I just picked up the beautiful Sang Guard kit and as going to put them together i thought id ask the dakka community which loadouts have they taken/deem most effective?
I was thinking sticking w/infernus pistol and staying away from the flamer and even adding in the pfist. Do you think the pfist is worth it or a point sink? what about the chapter banner? Thanks guys

Imo the power fist just doesn't look good enough for the Sanguinary guard, but it can add an extra punch.
Infernus pistols are good. I'd leave the flamers to tac squads.

I didn't use a death mask because you can't add just one. It's the whole squad for 50 points. I'll likely run them with Dante anyway. His mask is more than enough.

I added no special weapons, they're expensive enough as is and I didn't see the point of one pistol. The fist just didn't fit, aesthetically

its deathmasks for the whole squad for 25 points and 10pts for the pfist, not worth it then?

Don't know where I got the 50 points from. At 25 points they're much more reasonable, but I still wouldn't use them.

For 10 pts, a powerfist is a bargain, but the Sanguinary Guard are quite expensive already, so its up to you really.

I've taken the squad with a chapter banner, power fist, and one inferno pistol, making the unit round out at 250
The +1 banner attack plus the extra +1 they will get for being near my Sanguinor will mean they'll likely mince anything they meet in CC
Though I'm tempted to take a second inferno, I'm not sure whether to give it to my sang guard or my jump pack priest.

You pay 10 points because they already have a two-handed master-crafted power weapon! Any already having power weapon, normally only pays 10 points for a fist. So it got nothing to do with a bargain, their power weapon is already included in the price.
With Dante, Sanguinary Guards count as Elite, but do they still use the Elite slot? Or can you have 6 Sanguinary Guard units + Dante in one army? I was thinking about having 1 squad with 5 melta pistols and 2 squads with no upgrades, the death masks don't seem to be worth it to me, but I might make one squad with the masks.

Baxx: With Dante, Sanuinary Guard can be taken as TROOPS, not elites, and, if Dante is taken, then you can only take them in troops slots, not in elites as well. There isn't any RAW in the codex about this specifically (the second point), but i'm using the SW codex as a reference, where Logan Grimnar counts wolf guard as troops.

Ok thanks. Tempting to have an army mainly consisting of them. They wouldn't be versatile though. How about, if you have one unit, you buy different equipment to better survive by delegate wounds & ap2 wounds.

I run mine with banner (+1A), 2x infernus pistol & power fist. I also attach them to a priest (jump pack & lightning claw). I like two pistols since you are basically twin linking the melta shot... Well worth it if you can drop a dreadnaught or landraider. The power fist is a good deal at +10 points & again is an insurance policy. You get the attacks back with the banner. I have seen some people running them with 5x pistol... Very scary. They are a fantastic unit with the priest - 2+/4+.

@Black Blow Fly:
How about the following for 1500pts:
Dante
Sanguinator
3xSanguinary Guard
3xSanguinary Priest
I know model count is low, but I think it could be fun as hell and with each unit also gaining FNP and Furios Charge, I think it could bring a world of hurt...
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Chappy P!

How many meltapistols and powerfists are in that list? Power weapons are useless against mech armies. That army is very good against power armour armies, but nowadays you need to open the tanks to get to the good stuff. I think that army would do very poor against many armies, but it would be fun to try a couple of times. You could have 4xSanguinary Guards with less power fists and meltapistols though. The problem is that you have to sacrifice your own troops to kill the enemy, but your troops also has to take objectives.

I agree the power fist is a good insurance policy, but it's not that much of a good deal. Sanguinary Guards with Dante are basicly assault marines that pays 32 points per model to get 2-handed master-crafted power weapon, +1A and 2+ save. What do you mean by you get attacks back with the banner? Sanguinary Guards have 2 attacks regardless of which weapons they carry.

He probably means that the banner gives each of them +1 attack which makes up for their lack of extra attack due to not having pistol/ ccw. Otherwise they don't really get +1A over assault marines. Their statline is a 2 instead of a 1 but the Assault Marines will always be getting 2 because of pistol/ ccw. You're paying 32 points per model for artificier armor and MC power weapons.
I run my unit with 3x Infernus Pistol and a Power Fist. I'm taking 3 Infernus Pistols because it seems to be the magic number for killing a tank dead. I then attach a Sanguinary Priest with a Jump Pack and Power Weapon to the unit. These guys are really scary against anything with a T characteristic that is similar to their strength or lower. I've been toying with adding the banner as it feels like those extra attacks can be really nice for trying to avoid hidden power fists and the like. As a 5 man unit with no available storm shields a power fist can really hurt them badly, and do it quickly. Anything that doesn't ignore armor saves is laughable with 2+ saves followed by FNP though.
Lately I've been wondering if a Librarian + Honor Guard with some Storm Shields would be a bit better in place of the Sanguinary Guards. I don't get quite as many power weapon attacks and I lose the 2+ save but I gain a couple of storm shields to help mitigate power weapons/fists as well as a higher overall volume of attacks and assuming the power gets cast, I get preferred enemy on the unit as well. Or if the circumstance calls for it I have the Force Weapon as well.

Here is my army list expanded from above:
Dante-225pts
2x5 Sanguinary Guards w/Power fist, 3xInfernus Pistols and 1 unit with Banner (Dante goes with this one, while a Sanguinary Priest rides with the other squad) -240pts/270pts w/Banner
2x5 Sanguinary Guards w/Power fist, 3xPlasma Pistol each with a Sanguinary Priest - 240pts per squad
3xSanguinary Priest w/Jump pack and power sword - 270pts
Total: 1485pts (maybe buy each priest melta bombs with left over points?)

These lists seem expensive and doomed to die. I think that at 1,500 points a guard army can have more things that ignore FnP than you have models. Not to mention that even with Descent of Angels you might still land out of the 3" magic pistol range and still can't charge after you pop a vehicle.
It'll be fun to play for a match or two and then you'll realize how easy you are to beat and how much you wasted on models that you'll never use outside of Apocalypse games.

Let me know how it plays! I am torn right now, because I do not get a lot of gaming or modeling time, so I would love to put this together, but I am also curious about the upcoming spearhead and warhammer 8th edition. I really want to see if they finally change some of the crappy high elf models, mainly the ones done by Gary Morely.
I think this incarnation of the list would be good, it will not crush everything, but I think it would be a fun list to play. I am more about fun and unusual list than the net cookie-cutter stomp them all into the ground win at all cost list.
If I do make said list, then with a bump in points, I would most likely add Sanguinor.
Anyway, please let me know how it does and if I do end up putting the list together myself, I will do the same.

Yeah unfortunately I haven't played in a couple of weeks, and can't play until next week. No play makes Jack a dull boy... I have already tested the 3 Baals + 3 Vindicator army with various results, however, that army was not as much fun to play with.
I'm looking forward to try infantry-based army, and no other army of that kind screams POWAH like this one.
