I think I found your problem here. Essentially, you've spent far, far too much on upgrades. Priests, especially are useless. No
IG model is above I3. Most enemies strike first. The priest is an
IC. He can be singled out in combat, he's 1W, T3, with a 4+
inv. Any sensible opponent can kill him before your squad strikes, boom, 60 points down the drain, you've given up a
KP. Even if your opponent is incompetent and the priest survives a turn or two, is a 45-point upgrade going to make an
IG squad good in combat? Course not. Individual
IG squads aren't good in a melee. Live with it.
So, your current platoons are a compromise between combat and mechanised firepower. Here are two altenratives. Mechanised:
PCS - 4 flamers, chimera: 105
PIS -
GL,
AC, chimera: 120
PIS -
GL,
AC, chimera: 120
See, that's not even half as expensive as your current platoon. Take 2 of those, and a squad of veterans in a chimera w/3 meltaguns. More units, more firepower, won't get rolled any worse in assault than before.
Or, combat:
PCS, 3 flamers, vox: 50
4xPIS: 1 vox, 4
PWs, 1 commissar w/
PW, 4 meltaguns: 340
Again, I think 2 of those squads is just a tad more than your current platoon. This, I suppose, is the one formation where a ministorum priest would be useful. Don't give him any upgrades, trail him at the back of the unit so when he piles in he never makes base contact - thus denying your enemy the opportunity to assassinate him. See, 45 points for 20 rerolled attacks? Not too great. With 80 attacks? Better. (still completely optional
IMO though)
Ok, hope that helps with the platoons. Really, it's eating up your points at present.
With chimeras, stubbers and dozer blades are not necessary. I'd only ever consider dozer blades if I was fielding so many vehicles they were jamming up between terrain.
Veterans, looking alright, I would drop the pistol on the sergeant and the grenadiers upgrade, you'd be pretty close to buying them a chimera. Better protection than carapace, adds mobility to get that 12" touble-tap in, and a nifty tank in its own right. Yeah, your guys will overheat 1/9 shots instead of 1/12. Who cares, its what they're for.
Leman russes - heavy stubbers are a bit weak,
HB sponsons likewise. They're not bad per se - its just that most experienced players tend to keep upgrades light and get more on the field.
Hope that helps - in summary, you could fit a LOT more bodies and vehicles in, and wreck face easier. Wargear is your enemy, embrace quantity!
