Began building up my first 40k force a couple weeks ago, and now that the money is almost used up I need to find out what things left are essential that I should pick up. I could afford 2-3 more boxes of something. Here is what I have now:

2x Terminator 5 man squads
1x 5 man scout squad
35 tactical marines
1x 5 man assault squad

2x dreadnoughts (one with extra bits modded to venerable)
1 Rhino
1 Drop pod

1 Marneus Calgar squad (with his bannerguard)

Basically everything from a battleforce, 2 black reach sets, and adding in a drop pod and marneus.

I have all the paint and model supplies I need, and even have a nice new figure case, so now I just need to know what you would recommend to round out the force?

thanks!

The next one of you that posts about Wraiths being I2 and ignores the whip coils mentioned 2000 times a week, and I am going to devote the rest of my life to becoming an ancient space god to trick and enslave a race, and turn them into soulless T-100s to rid the entire universe of life. At that point it will have been worth it.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

a Vanilla Landraider or a Dakka predator are good alround choices.

a vindicator or 3 would add some Str10 pie....mmmmm piiiieeee.

3 Typhoon landspeeders.

if your scouts are close combat orientated(BPs and CCWS) a LSS for first turn assaults.

2 more rhinos and/or 2-3 more Pods. 2 pods coming in first turn with dreds are great for meltaing 2 tanks first turn.

5 more assault marines. 5 assault marines die, 10 assault marines kill things.

A Chaplain or a librarian in termie armor.

TH/SS terminators.

add some clyclone missile launchers to your tactical terminators.

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

thanks for the detailed response. At this point though, I really can only afford another 2-3 things, so what is most pressingly needed in order to have a functional army?

Bulk up your scout and assault squads to 10 men, and get a Space Marine captain - really, you need a cheaper HQ than Calgar.

The first two things I would to with that list would be to add an HQ that's less then 250 points (librarians are fun, MotF will let you use both dreads and two termi squads), and to convert some of that mass of tac marines into sternguard vets (Add some purity seals and you're good to go, do a better job later, possibly repaint their heads white, although this is a huge hassle).

There's just an acre of you fellas, isn't there?

I can't find any master of the forge on GW, ebay or practically anywhere. What is it exactly, and is it even still usable?

I'd say maybe another Rhino or two. I agree with Mekano on converting some to Sternguard Veterans. It really depends on what you're going for though. If you feel you need your dreads closer to enemies then another drop pod would be a good option, but again it all depends on what you feel like you're lacking in your game.

Terminators need a heavy weapon. I'd see if you can find someone with terminator bits left over. Shoulder pad and assault cannon or cyclone launcher or something. Play some games. Don't buy everything before you play and see what you like. You impression of an army usually changes after you play it.

There's no actual model for a Master of the Forge, but any Techmarine model will serve nicely. This Techmarine in servo harness should do the trick: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat1020021&prodId=prod1060067

I second the heavy weapons for terminators. I recommend cyclone missile launchers (one for each 5-man squad).

I also second the cheaper HQ. Recommend a librarian (you can always have Calgar proxy for a captain with power fist and storm bolter).

Next, I would beef up your special and heavy weapons. You say 35 tactical marines, but if it was AOBR and battle force those are probably all flamer/ML. Recommend you buy some plasma guns and melta guns for the tacticals, some power fists for the sergeants, and some plasma cannons for the infantry (perhaps pick up a devastator box?)

Finally, I second the call for more armor. A predator (magnetize it!) is a great addition. Alternatively a Landspeeder typhoon or a multi-melta attack bike.
