Subject: Competitive Orks-1000 Points

Alright, i'm fairly new with Orks but feel that i've been lurking and talking to enough people to get their general strategy. I'm attempting to make a 1000 point Ork list that has the tools to beat other competitive armies. Any critiques are appreciated. Please, do not hold back.
Here's where i'm at so far(accounting for suggestions made to me in posts):
HQ:
Big Mek w/ KFF +Cyborg Body +Burna(? had 20 left over) 115
Troops:
30 Shoota Boyz w/ Nob + Pk +Bp 220
30 Shoota Boyz w/ Nob + Pk +Bp 220
30 Shoota Boyz w/ Nob + Pk +Bp 220
Elite:
5 Lootas 75
5 Lootas 75
5 Lootas 75
Total: 1000
Changes made:
I dropped a warboss(cyborg, kombi, pk) for a Big Mek w/ KFF which free'd up 15 additional points.
Dropped 3 Koptas w/ upgrades(160 points) for 5 more lootas, 12 more shoota boyz, Cyborg Body on Big Mek. Had 20 left over, threw a burna on the big mek..was considering trying to fit a klaw on him instead.

Not bad. For a 'quick fix' I would change the Warboss to KFF but I assume you're running him because you don't have a KFF?
And I personally would run the Koptas as three seperate units, also is the Buzz saw worth dropping 4 boys for? (Imo, yes because it can save your arse after shocking shooting, but others might disagree)

I would drop the warboss for a kff mek, just throw him in the front of a unit in the back so that the unit he is in gets a 4+ save for shooting through your front unit and your front unit will have a 5+ save. I would also probably only run one kopta, keep the buzzsaw, maybe pick up a small grot squad for home field objectives. All that being said you have what? 92 bodies on the board, that can be a real challenge for most armies to deal with at 1000 pts.

As mentioned by others a big mek with a kff will be a massive benefit. However cut those boyz down to 20 per unit and you really need killa kanz to act as a kan wall.
Lootas really don't have enough fire power per unit to do a lot.
Kopters are fine. But put them in seperate f.a slots if possible.

Alright..so I think everyone agrees to drop the warboss for a Big Mek w/ KFF..which frees up 15 points, i'll go ahead and make that change since it seems unanimous.

Can add extra loota or put a flamer on Big mek...might be 3pts over though, but I find having a power weapon with my Big Mek's essential.

What exactly are you trying to do- Is this a starter list that will expand or are you thinking you want a force to be competitive only at 1000 pts. I ask because I would advise against orks if you wanted to be competitive in bigger games. At 1000 pts orks are the bully on the playground- as they get older (bigger point value) they are not scary, and kinda get pushed around. That being said, and assuming you only want 1000 pts of orks, here is what I have learned.
Orks give people difficulty by manufacturing lists that other armies can't beat because without being tooled to counter your strategy, they don't have the ability to counter. Keep in mind, you will come across some lists- not often mind you- that will wipe the board with you even though they have troubles elsewhere (Certain SOB builds come to mind) Lists like this are best made with two concepts; spam and target denial. Orks can do both of these well. Keeping this in mind- My thoughts on your list.
HQ- Definitely Mek with Kff- if you get extra points, eavy armor and Cybork body can save you if your mek gets into combat- consider it. They are not required but can and will save you.
Troops- If you want to do boy spam- big units are they way to go. Shoota boyz are pretty sweet, consider the pure volume of S4 shots you can put out. The more groups of these you can put out the better.
Elites- Your lootas arent under powered, at they can and will do some serious damage- the problem is they become a single target worth shooting at in your army. If you play a static gunline- which can actually work with orks- this may not be a horrible problem. You just have to surround them with boyz to protect them. Although, as with all things in this list- the more the better.
Fast attack- Lose the the deff koptas, buy more lootas and maybe more boyz. Deff Koptas do nothing for you. Again they are a target worth shooting with high AP weapons to kill and make back points, and they bring nothing to the table, aside from maybe a late turn turbo boost to contest an objective.
I would just castle my boyz, surround as many lootas as I wanted with my boyz, use my kff mek to give cover to one large squad in front, hide the others behind, make my opponent come to me, or move steadily forward, blasting with as many s4 shots as I dare, using lootas to pop transports and high priority targets. Make your enemy beat you, it works pretty well.
You will have problems with AV 14, but that is going to be the case no matter what. It actually doesnt come up that much in 1000pts in reality.

Updated my list with the suggestions. Thanks a ton for the detailed advice Elnicko. To answer your questions, I just bought a ton of Orks so the investment has already been made..got them off a friend who was fed up with them so I got them at a good price and he was happy to accept the cash. They will mainly be played at 1000 and below although I have seen a few battle reports on here where people have been fairly successful at higher end tournaments.
Edit: Would love to fit a Klaw on the Big Mek, could do it by dropping the burna and a boy..but then my units would be 30, 30, 29 :(..those kinds of things irk me.
