Subject: Vehicle weaponry: Simultaneous firing?

Hi All,
I'm fully aware that with, for example, a squad of guardsmen you can't melta open a vehicle and then flame the contents because it's all simultaneous, but does the same principle stand for a vehicle that can independently target with all of its weapons?
For instance, can a Chaos Defiler pop a transport with a Lascannon shot, then Battlecannon the troops that spill out?
I have a strange feeling that the answer is 'no', but I can't seem to find the relevant text in the BRB.

Your feeling is correct, all a vehicles weapons must target the same unit. What you are looking for is the very first sentence in the vehicle shooting section of the rules (page 58).
|
In one game turn an Imperial guardsman can move 6", kill a few guys with his flamer, assault 6", kill two more guys with his bayonet, flee 12", regroup when assaulted, react 6", kill one more guy with his bayonet and then flee another 12".
So in one game turn an Imperial guardsman can move 42" and kill more than 5 people. At the same time a Chimera at top speed on a road can move 18"... |

Try looking for a rule that allows you to pick a second shooting target. (hint there's none, but feel free to look for it anyway)

Also the Battle cannon is Ordnance, so youre not going to be able to fire it with another weapon anyway....
The above are correct: all firing from a unit is simultaneous.

Yes, unless it's a super-heavy vehicle.
So no.

Ahhaaah, thanks for clearing that up so quickly.
So if a right sponson fires at a unit on the right, the left sponson is useless?

Yes, unless you have POTMS.
Remember that pivoting isn't movement though, so you can often fire with both sponsons anyway, sometimes at the cost of exposing side or rear armour.

Oh right, yeah. I don't play marines, no wonder I didn't recognise that. It didn't come up in Dakka's wonderful acronym-deducing orange text either! Somebody get on that!

Expect Daemonic Possession to do the same thing as POTMS (or just give things the "We are legion" rule from C:CD) untill then chaos is stuck with 1 target per vehicle, making our LRs just that much worse then the SM counterparts.
Also, try giving your defiliers a bunch of CCWs and its battle cannon 60% of the time it works every time!

It's also worth noting that even with POTMS and Superheavy vehicles you still can't shoot the transport with one weapon and then shoot the disembarked unit with another weapon. Like Long Fangs, you still have to declare your targets and check line of sight for all weapons before rolling any dice.

Uh, you may wanna reread the movement section. You can't pivot a vehicle in the shooting phase, pivoting isn't considered movement for the sake of how many weapons you can fire while stationary . Only walkers may pivot in the shooting phase since their rules specifically state they can due to their superior mobility over other vehicles.

Even with Tau vehicles and superheavies, which can target different units, you still need to declare where every gun is shooting before starting to roll dice.
So no, you can never do this...

Even still, 5th edition rules are much more liberal with how firing works as compared to 3rd edition.
I remember having to allocate all my lances at once, typically losing half the fireforce as the vehicle in question would sometimes be killed by the first shot.
