Windsor & Newton are expensive but extremely high quality. I've had mine for months and the tips are like new. The series 7 #000 brush is without a doubt the best fine detail brush I have ever laid hands on. Makes painting eyes easy.

I also use a couple of GW's brushes, namely Fine Detail and Detail, and have found them to be fairly good quality, and a lot cheaper than W&N.

Raphael 8404 and Winsor and Newton Series 7 (regular)... I use pretty much exclusively the size 0 and 1.

Rosemary & Co. Pure Kolinsky Sable brushes are cheap but extremely high quality. Series 22 and 33 seem to be the most popular ranges. I have been using Series 33 sizes 0,1 and 2 for couple of months and I have been extremely happy with their performance so far. By the looks of it, these are going to serve me for a long time.

It seems like the pure kolinsky sable brushes are the favourite of many of you. I'm definitely searching for fine detail brushes, but what would you recommend for basecoast brushes that are a good balance between value and quality? Imagine the kind of brush you'd use to do a basic coat on a trygon or similar creature that requires you to stay inside some lines.

Good choice between value and quality is the NEW GW brush. The ones with the black handles.

I'm definitely a raphael and w&n guy, but I do use the GW wash brush and a few others and they are nice.

The ones with black handles? Are those available in stores? This is a new thing to me as all I know of is the blue handled ones (which I do like a lot)

They certainly are. They are a HUGE improvement from the blue handled ones.

The Windsor and Newton Series 7 are NOT that expensive, but are worth many times what they cost. Dick Blick and Art Supply Warehouse have sales on the Series 7 a couple of times a year, but even at their normal price they are a a good deal.

Buy the Standard brush, not the Miniature; the difference is in the length of the bristle, not the precision of the point. The W&N Series 7 maintains a wonderful point, the Size 1 will do 90% of everything you would normally need for a miniature. I may have several of the 2x0, the 1, the 2 and the 4, but you really don't need them, I certainly only us most of them infrequently.

For the grunt work jobs like dry brushing, priming, washing, etc. I recommend you buy the $2 store brand brushes; these are the ones you will be abusing most and will need to replace more frequently. I try to have a handful of white nylon 1/4" flats for that kind of work. They are the real work horse brush; when they go bad you don't feel too bad for throwing them away.

Once you try a really high quality brush you'll wonder why you held off for so long, they really are that worth it.

Windsor and Newton, but i also use Filbert Loew-Cornell series 4, Daler-Rowney series 2, Fox/Renard Argente series 4, and sometimes testors or GW. All of these brushes are professional and standard for good painting on miniatures, everyone has their favorites. I like to use a variety for different things, depending on the softness i need i go for a soft tip to a medium tip.

Windsor and Newton seems to be the best but the same company makes Loew-Cornell and i love those as well.

$7.85 for a size 0 Winsor & Newton Series 7... yeah that's cheap. Someone please tell me that I don't need any more brushes; because I'm gnawing at the bit!

W&N Series 7.

Can't praise them enough.

--The whole concept of government granted and government regulated 'permits' and the accompanying government mandate for government approved firearms 'training' prior to being blessed by government with the privilege to carry arms in a government approved and regulated manner, flies directly in the face of the fundamental right to keep and bear arms.

Well you guys really seem to favour W&N. I think I'm going to have to give them a try, as well as the new black handled GW brushes.

Always worth repeating that brushes are only as good as the care they receive. Get a good brush cleaning soap and use it after every session as it's well worth it if you want to make the money you invested in your new brushes go a long way.

Don't I know it. I've had some of my brushes for 6 years because I wash meticulously. Once the tips get frayed I clip off the offenders and the standard brush becomes a large detail brush and so on down the line until it has 10 bristles and is used for painting retinas on eldar eyes.

I do 75% of my work with a W&N series 7 size 2. It looks big at first but after a bit of using it, you realize the tip is as fine as many smaller brushes, but it hold a larger amount of paint.

I use a Lowel-Cornell golden taklon #2 for most of my base coating, and I have an older 18/0 brush I got about 10 years ago that I use for extremely fine lining.

You definitely can not go wrong with the W&N brushes though.

Also look into getting some Masters brush soap. In everything I own it is the best $9 I ever spent. Cleans brushes, you can leave it on the brush to condition it. Fantastic stuff. It will soften the blow of the price of some of the better brushes when you don't have to replace them as often.
