I am still a pretty fresh 40k player (about 5 months in) and I would love to start a WHFB army, I just don't know where. I guy at my FLGS is selling his dwarf army for really cheap, but I'm not sure I want to play Dwarfs. I'm interested in Tomb Kings, Ogres, Beastmen, Vampire Counts, or possibly even Orcs and Goblins. I don't want to invest money in an army that isn't fun, or that gets steamrolled every game though. I'd gladly appreciate some tips and starting points!

Dwarves I wouldn't recomend to a starting player. They are characterful but unfriendly because of a ridiculously low movement value. If staying still the entire game sounds exciting to you Dwarves are it.

Orcs and Goblins are hilarious to play, but completely unreliable. I love them personally, but I rarely win with them.

Vampire counts are cool, and they are rather powerful as well.

Ok I'll try and give a basic overview of the armies you mentioned:

Dwarves- Slow and lacking magic (although they have a lot of magic defense). They have very good ranged units and really tough infantry. They are usually used as a gunline army and are really powerful when played like this. They can also be played as a combat army but lack of movement makes this harder.

Tomb kings- Fear causing army. Basic guys have very low initiative and aren't great, however magic can heal them. TK magic is powerful and very easy to cast. How to use magic is oe of the main things to learn for TK. The magic is used to improve or help units. If they loose their heirophant (you choose a priest to be the heirophant) they crumble and loose units at the start of each turn.

Ogres- An army based on monsters. Aside from gnoblars everything hs at least 3 wounds. They have nice models but the rules aren't great. They are the weakest army but they are ok in non competitive games. They look like a brute force army but low WS and S means they take a lot of skill and tactics. Their main strength is in high movement.

Beastmen- a glasshammer army. Hit hard but die easy. They have a lot of monsters all of which are powerful. Low Ld and armour mean they die easy and run a lot, but once they get into combat they cause a lot damage.

Vampires- Cheap expendable units and powerful characters. Their basic units never flee, are hard to kill and can be healed with magic making them great at holding other units in combat. Their main tactic is to lock units in combat with large cheap units they hit them with the hard hitting units. The army causes fear.

Orcs and Goblins- This is the random army of WHFB. They are very unpredictable for both players. A lot of the game will rely on chance if you are lucky they will do grat if not they will probably loose. If you are one for build complex battle plans this army isn't for you, there is a good chance that some units will just stop doing anything for some turns. Playing this army you may not win many games but they will almost always be fun.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah Dwarves aren't really my style, I like to be upclose and in the assault (if that's what it's even called in WHFB).

I assume magic is like psychic powers in 40k? Where double 1's and double 6's is bad? Beastmen sound fun, kind of how Orks are in 40k?

Also I forgot to add in Wood Elves look really interesting as well. And of course, Empire for the classic knight look.

----------

Not really...they can't be as horde-esque as orks in 40k, and no, magic is completely different than psychic powers.

Really, Beastmen can either be really good, or really terrible, this all will be answered in 8th edition.

I really wouldn't recommend beastmen for a beginner, they kind of play like elves in a way, since they have no armour at all for the majority of their troops.

If you like assaulting, Warriors of Chaos might be for you, ALL of their units are assault related, and can either be very magic heavy, or very very hard-hitting with CC (though magic heavy will still probably stomp alot of armies in CC), and they are very versatile equipment-wise.

Hmm alright. Maybe I should just wait until 8th edition comes out? Hopefully they'll release a new starter with armies that I'm interested in.

Starter is High Elves and Skaven ^.^

Really, it depends if you CAN wait, I get immersed in Warhammer, and really can't wait, but if you can wait 'till july 10th, I suppose.

I should hope so, I love my boyz and gobbos, but they don't seem to love me.

If you like orkses in 40K then you will love orcs and gobbos
as stated they won't always win but you and tour oppo are pretty much guaranteed a lot of fun.

I find them hilarious at times, but if you want a smart tactical game they ,may be frustrating when they just start fighting each other

Psycik powers does roughly equate to magic as you say

I don't play Orks in 40k, although I'd love to (Nurgle Marines and Space Wolves). Money is just such an issue in this hobby, especially when you're a broke student. My FLGS does offer about 15% off of retail price though which is nice.

I'll probably end up waiting until july, but that guy is also selling his High Elves, which I heard were pretty good actually, I just don't know if I could bring myself to play them..

I should say that Psychic Powers are really not the same as Magic. Magic normally plays a much bigger role, and are also a little trickier to use than psychic powers.
Double sixes are good, double ones are very bad, magic doesn't rely on leadership, and so on.
You can't compare 40k to fantasy that much, actually.

Btw CaptainHonkey, did you hear that there will be a new OnG armybook? It might be that people assume there will be one soon, as they got some new models now
