A thread for any Aussies or Kiwi's on Dakka. It's been an early morning here, getting up for the Dawn Service, but well worth it.
Does anyone currently serve, has served or has family that has served in the Aus or NZ army? Please, share your stories.

There's no slaute smiley, so this'll do.

My Grandfather served with some Austrailians in WW2, and my dad had a few Aussies in his unit in Bosnia as well, does that count?

As long as he called them 'mate' then he's alright, I guess.

I'll need to ask them then, but I'm reasonably sure he did.

Um. Okay, maybe I better explain what ANZAC Day is. In short, it is very similar to Rememberance Day, but Australians and New Zealanders treat it as a public holiday dedicated to remembering the lost lives of fallen ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) soldiers not just in Galipolli but worldwide.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Did you about the guys that interupted the ceremony in Melbourne by running through and waving Turkish flags around? What douches.
It's not that I resent Turkey or anything for Galipolli, in fact, the ANZAC service I went to in Dubai was hosted by the Turkish Consulate. But those guys were just foul.

Toowoomba, Australia

I was in the reserves for 3 years and marched in 3 marches. Was before east timor deployment so no overseas service.

My grandfather was in the airforce in the south pacific and was president of his local RSL for 3, 2 year stints.

Great grandfather 1 fought at Gallipoli and the western front in WW1
Great Grandfather 2 fought on the western front
Great Grandfather 3 was in Oz, but sent back to Germany at outbreak of war, and fought for the germans on the western front, then post war returned to Australia.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
My wife is working at the hospital today so I have to look after out 15 month old son. Had his morning nap when the marches started so stayed at home with him and watched the marches on TV when he got up.

Missed out on the dawn services unfortunately, but a couple of my mates went to watch beneath hill 60 in memoration, suprised how many vets were watching it too..

the worst part was some teens behind us, it was a scene when the germans killed on of the miners and the kid said "Damn Nazi's".. i sighed.

LWF.

(OT: beneath hill 60 is an amazing movie, highly reccomend it, extremely sad)

I almost always agree with Albatross, I can't see why anyone wouldn't.

Okay, so the male version of "Cougar" is now officially "Albatross".
